Welcome

to my comparison page between the sub and dub of Arislan

Note: I am, as usual, watching this as I comment on it here.

Okay, from the beginning: who's Ashen? Ashi? Make up your minds! They never mention her in the OJV. Oh, these voices.... ::shiver:: And stop pronouncing the names that way dammit!! I swear the producers went to the cheap theaters of London and nabbed the actors off of a Shakespeare production. : P It's like watching a bad play with melodramatic "actors". But at least Daryoon doesn't say "It's only the wind" [or something to that effect] because it is never the wind. He says "It was probably some leaves rustling" which is not as cliche, nee? That, I believe, is the closest line in the whole thing. I really hate it when They try to westernize these shows. They aren't western, they will never be western, so don't bother, you just end up ruining it! Oh, I stand corrected, the line that is the closest to the OJV is when all of the soldiers yell "oil! oil!".

Daryoon just cannot yell in the EV. He is certainly no Inoue Kazuhiko who can scream, yell, and get pissed off with the best of them. Perhaps the best part of the EV is the fact that Arislan does not scream so.... comically. (("Bachmaaaan!!!" ::cracks up::)) Oh no no no... ::giggle:: the best part is the fact that John Bodan sounds suspiciously like Papa Smurf!! : D ::rofl:: (I am not kidding! He does!) Okay, we finally get a guy doing a young boy's voice (that is so rare in anime) and now that They translate it, They once again make the young boy's voice done by a woman. -_-* I'm speaking of course of Elam.

Oh dear, and there's yet another job for Narsus-sama. In the sub, they say he was once the royal historian (said by Arislan), then later that he was the "great strategist of Palse" [pronounced "palsa", which makes me think "salsa" and Caryn thinks "Talsa" - either way, it's hilarious] which was said by Silver Mask. Now, in the dub Arislan says "imperial secretary". ::wails:: My poor Narsus-sama!! = ( How could they trivialize him so! It's not fair!! It's almost as bad as changing the pronunciation of Gieve. How could They dare to call him Jieve??? BAKA!!!! >=( They also change Narsus' best lines. That's just too bad. The two mean the same thing, it's just that it is translated better in the sub. (Say, as soon as I can, I'll add a list of Best Lines... from the sub of course. Oh, are there ever some great ones.... ::chuckle::) Well, I suppose Narsus' dub voice isn't so bad. It really takes some getting used to. Nee, Narsus doesn't seem nearly so gay in the dub either. Darn. Y'see, one of my running theories is that Narsus and Elam have a... special relationship, hahaha... I don't mean that to sound bad! So don't take it that way. There's something very attractive about gay men...

I don't like Daryoon nearly so much in the dub, isn't that sad? If I had only seen the dub, I wouldn't even like the show as much, I think. And I surely wouldn't like Daryoon. He's just... well... how do I put this... dumb. Oh oh oh! There it is! There it is! ::stops, swings around and hits rewind:: There! There! Did you hear it? Oh, you didn't? Well, then I'll type it. Okay, this is the absolute best thing anyone could have ever done. This line is the only improvement made upon the show through translation. Daryoon to Arislan after the prince promising to make Narsus-sama royal artist: "Your Highness, granting him the appointment of Imperial Artist would be like putting a priest in charge of a brothel!" ::falls out of chair, laughing:: See? See? Isn't that an improvement upon "Your Highness, no! If you do that our fine culture will be destroyed!" Lol, they're both amusing lines.

::sighs after hearing the OJV:: I needed that... ::shakes head:: Anou, where was I? Ah, enter John Bodan, a.k.a. Papa Smurf. And consequently, watashi no Gieve-san. Ah, right you are, kid: what a hero. [another changed line] This whole Tahamenay part (which is well documented in my guide to Gieve) is not even close to the OJV. I love that part in the OJV, but in the dub, it's just... passively amusing. (Every time I hear this new voice and look at the scream, it is painfully obvious that this is not the original... -_-*)

The part in the sewers is also ruined. ::sigh:: They took out the "mercury in your veins" line - I love that one so much! I thrive on irony! This doesn't make much sense. I don't like this sewer scene. : ( I do like how Timothy Bentinck says "Oh pardon me" which is not in the sub. "Insolent boy"? She's calling Gieve and "insolent boy"? And, oh, I hate this line!! "I may be good with bows and arrows but I'm far to much of a coward to want to fight a woman on my own." Oh what I wouldn't give for a little Kazuki Yao... ::sigh:: And this woman can not scream. She sounds bored: "aaaaaaahhhhh......" as opposed to "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" A most notable difference. Gieve mentioned nothing of Metal Head (err, that is Silver Mask - he calls him Metal Head, lol) in the OJV.

::rofl:: There's Papa Smurf again. He must have gone nuts b/c the Papa Smurf I remember never talked about burning bodies and torture and other icky things. (Now wouldn't that be interesting? "Let's all go get Gargamel and roast his evil body over a fire pit! Mwa ha ha ha!!!") Oh my, that guard trying to, anou, rape(?) Elam is funny. Hm, for some reason, Elam is pulling off a girl's voice very well, I wonder how that could happen? ::akambe::

Oh, the story is too different. I can't stand it! ::lunges for the remote and slams down on fast forward::

Ah, enter Pharangese. Or should I say, Pharangeezay"? ::covers ears:: And that awful Jieve name! How absolutely horrid of them! The story that Pharangese tells is much different than the one she tells Gieve-san in the OJV. Jieve is significantly less poetic than Gieve. And another thing, Gieve is supposed to be mysterious and difficult to figure out, but Jieve is immediately stripped away and there is no wonder as to what his motives are. How fair is that? The main reason I am so enamoured by the sweet poet is the fact that his motives are hidden and questionable. Pharangeezay takes all of that away from me. ...But she does give me hope: she states that Gieve is looking for something to give him a purpose. ::giggle:: Maybe I could.... no, forget that. ^-^ Heh heh heh...

"Look over there! Something glinting in the sun! It's a bird! It's a plane! No! It's Arislan!!" ::giggle:: Okay, so he didn't quite say that, but he may as well have; the real line wasn't much better. This is so stupid! And that is really sad b/c this is one of, if not the best anime I've ever seen! ::sigh:: Watashi no Gieve-san... Narsus-sama... Daryoon-san... Okay, so technically I don't have dibs on Daryoon, Caryn does, but I can still admire his... fine looks and... nice voice. ~.^

Ooh! Ooh! It's my line! "Palsa forevaaaaahh!!!!" [Kharlan jumping off a cliff.] ^.^ That is so funny. This is great too. :Snake Priest: Kharlan is dead. [long pause] Silver Mask: What?!?!?!!?!: And how do They get away with saying that Andragoras dies at the end? He reappears in the fourth video for Pete's sake!! How the heck are they gonna pull that off! "Oh, btw, he didn't die, we just felt like saying he did." For the benefit of those of you who have not had the good fortune of seeing the OJV, Andragoras does not die at the end of the first tape, and Hermes does not have a little brother! I really can't imagine why they added that unless they felt sorry for him and wanted the public to feel sorry for him too. ::shrug:: Whatever. He's a nutcase no matter how you look at it. (Sorry Caryn; you can have him too if you want, I don't think he's very cute.) Well, this is where I'll end this silly thing. If I get my hands on the second tape then I will certainly add comments on that too. ^-^ Heh heh, I'm sure you can't wait. And if I can manage to kill one of our VCRs forcing my dad to buy a stereo one, then I will record lines from both so that you may decide which you think is better, sub or dub. ((*Sub! Sub! Sub!*)) Hehehehe... Bye my adoring public!

See more Gieve?
