From the A-Bomb Dome, one can cross the T-shaped Aioi-bashi Bridge to the Peace Memorial Park (Heiwa-kooen). It is thought that the T-shape may have been the actual aiming point used by the bombardier. If so, his aim was acute. The park is dotted with memorials including the cenotaph which contains the names of all the known victims of the bomb and frames the A-Bomb Dome across the river. The flame burning beneath the arched cenotaph is not designed to be eternal – when the last nuclear weapon on earth has been destroyed it will be extinguished.
