Kan-no-mado (1850) – meaning "a window for cold season" – contains documents going back to the year 1000 and mainly covers religious and ceremonial origami. The few free-time subjects can be reduced to symbolism loaded with superstition. Most of the models did become classic hits in the western: the dragon fly, the crane, the ape, the aubergine, the wild boar, the cicada, the snail, the crab, the iris, the shrimp, the boat, the lotus bud…

The format of the paper depends on the model: the dragon fly is folded from a regular hexagonal, the ape with long arms from an irregular polygon, while most of the models start from simple square sheets.
