The Evangelions

The Evangelions look like gigantic mecha created for battling the Angels that descend on Earth (and that's almost all they are). However, they are living creatures (or humanoids), and in battle blue blood often spurts out when they have a limb removed. Evangelions are usually controlled by their pilots, who are placed in a cylindrical plug (known as an entry plug) and then inserted into the Eva. The plugs are filled with LCL fluid, which enables the pilots to "breathe" in oxygen that goes directly into their blood so that they don't suffocate after spending five minutes in their Evas. The Evas are powered by external electrical energy sources via external cable, sometimes called an umbilical cord (i.e. they have big plugs with long extension cords in their backs). The Evas can run on their emergency battery packs for about 5 minutes at nominal power, 1 1/2 minutes on full power, and 15 hours on life support. Due to the fact that Evas get so beaten up in battle, it costs millions of dollars to repair them, and the amount of destruction their battles cause eventually led to a civilian corporation building an imitation Eva (only it looked like a puked on rag doll). This thing was powered with a nuclear reactor, which of course made it more dangerous, but the guy who created it didn't feel like acknowledging that. In the end the Evas stuck around.

EVA Unit-00

Pilot: Ayanami Rei

EVA-00 was the first (Artificial Humanoid) Evangelion to be created (circa 2000). Listed as a proto-type, it was probably used mainly for figuring out how to improve the other Evas. EVA-00 is used least often in battle, and when it is used it's used as a back-up Eva, a defensive Eva, or a shield for another Eva. Although it wasn't in battle often, EVA-00's main weapons consisted of a Sniper Rifle, Positron Rifle and (once) the Longinus Spear. This Eva was the first to go into battle with the third angel, but after being thoroughly beaten up it retreated. In the beginning, this Eva was orange, but after being mauled by the third angel its color changed to blue (it also had one eye). During the original synchronization tests with its pilot (Rei), it went beserk and Rei's entry plug had to be ejected. Eventually Rei and her Eva did synchronize, but Unit 00 still wasn't used often because it was most vulnerable to being ripped to shreds and because it was only a proto-type (nothing more).

EVA Unit-01

Pilot: Ikari Shinji

Evangelion Unit 01 is the most efficient of the Evas. As a test-type, it has many of the modifications that Unit 00 doesn't, and is able to whoop ass a lot better. The Eva also has the highest synchronization rate with its pilot (Ikari Shinji), who is able to control the Eva even when he isn't in the cockpit (now that takes skill ^_^). This Eva was created after Unit 00, but it's creation date is not definite. The Eva's make-up is also shrouded in mystery. It seems that the Eva's armor is actually a form of imprisoning the entity inside of it (supposedly a clone of the first angel). Early on in its history, the Eva's first pilot (Ikari Yui ~ Shinji's mom), disappeared during a synchronization test in 2004. This Eva tends to go beserk often, blowing things up and ripping up angels and trying to protect Shinji even when it has no energy left and when there isn't a pilot inside of it. Eva 01 has two eyes and is violet-blue in color. It's main weapons are the Progressive Knife and the Positron Rifle. During the anime Eva 01 sees the most battle and has the highest kill record. It gets the job done, and done well.

EVA Unit-02

Pilot: Soryu Asuka Langley

This Eva was the Production Model for other Evas that might be manufactured in the future. It's designs were created in Japan and it was assembled in Germany. Eva 02 is the only Eva that can be controlled in both Japanese and German (due to the fact that its pilot is biligual). Unit 02 doesn't seem to have all the things that Unit 01 does, and isn't as efficient in battle as Unit 01 (although it is more efficient than Unit 00). In battle, it mainly uses the Progressive Lance along with the Positron Rifle. Although less efficient than Eva 01, Unit 02 sees its fair share of battle, although its pilot tends to screw things up more than help out. This Eva was all set for mass production until the creation of the S2 engine, which undermined Eva-02's position. Unit-02 has four eyes and is red in color. It's generally used for the dirty work since it's able to withstand more than the other Evas (when it comes to diving anyways).
