NYU Student Faces Disciplinary Measures for Speaking Up Against Racism

Sigmund Shen, an English Literature student in the Graduate School of Art and Sciences at NYU will face disciplinary actions for speaking out about discriminatory hiring by NYU. Protestors have placed three points on a petition directed towards the university. In it they demand that "the administration retract disciplinary measures taken against Sigmund Shen for speaking out against racism; hire Chinese construction workers immediately, and stop excluding Chinese workers from Union jobs at sites owned by NYU; and apologize to the Chinese community suffering from such acts of racism."
Nine months ago, the Chinese Construction Workers Association (CCWA) raised accusations that the New York University excluded Chinese construction workers from building a new dormitory. Peter Lin, a member of the CCWA, stated that it is already difficult to get into the "high paying field," and that all CCWA asks for are equal job opportunities.
