For 20 years, the East Coast Asian Student Union (ECASU) has been one ofthe largest unifying forces for Asian Pacific American students on campusesacross the United States. One of the largest completely student-run Asianorganizations in the United States, ECASU was established to establish thefollowing four principles of unity:

Build and strengthen broad democratic Asian and APA studentorganizations to serve the social, political, and educational need of Asianand APA students.
Promote the unity of Asians, APA and Eurasians from differentnationalities and backgrounds through greater understanding of the Asianexperience in America.
Fight for social, cultural, economic, educational, and politicalequality of Asians as an underrepresented group in the United States ofAmerica.
Strengthen relations and build coalition between Asians and APAs andother minorities and all people of color.

JANE SUNG-EE BAI: Executive Director of the Committee Against Anti-AsianViolence in NYC.
TI-HUA CHANG: Emmy-award winning reporter for NBC 4 NY.
JULIE CHON: a senior at Cornell University where she serves as thestudent elected representative to the Board of Trustees. One of Glamourmagazine's "Top Ten College Women."
VIJAY PRASHAD: an associtate professor of International Studies atTrinity College in CT. Coordinator of The Speakers Bureau, a specialinitiative of the Progressive South Asian Exchange Net (proXsa).
RENEE TAJIMA-PENA: documentary filmmaker. Directed the explosive film"Who Killed Vincent Chin," and "My America...or honk if you love Buddah."
GARY Y. OKIHIRO: Director of Cornell University's Asian American StudiesProgram. Professor of History and author.

~Programming~~

Some hilights of the conference:

Movie Screening: On Friday night, we will be screening ReneeTajima-Pena's new film, "My America...or honk if you love Buddah" which washonored at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. Following will be a questionand answer session with the filmmaker.

Panal Discussion: The theme of the discussion will be "Bridging the GapBetween College and Community Activism."

Workshops: Workshops will vary in size and most will be interactive.Some of workshop topics offered will be:

Asian American frats and sororities; how they can work withother Asian and APA groups on campus
APALA; labor issues
Thien Minh Ly case
South Asian student organizations
Campaign finance; OCA
Health issues; APACHA
Plan of Action (brainstorming) session

Concert Performance: The MOUNTAIN BROTHERS, an Asian American hip-hopgroup from Pennsylvania; their album is coming out early this year --sponsored by Cornell Chinese Students Association

Peeling the Bannanna: an Asian American acting troupe performing skitson identity and issues affecting APAS

Coffeehouse: Friday night, enjoy student performances, refreshements,meet other conference participants--sponsored by Cornell KDPhi

If you're a Cornell student, to register for ECASU, find any ECASUconference committee rep and buy a ticket. For Cornell students, it'sgoing to cost $5 (off-campus participants pay $20).
