Who is Huang YongXin?
March 24 1995, sixteen-year old Yong Xin Huang was shot in the back of the
head and killed by NYPD Officer Steve Mizrahi in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.
Yong Xin and three of his friends were playing with a BB gun in the
fenced-in yard of his friend's home when a neighbor called 911. Shortly
after the police arrived, Yong Xin lay dead in a pool of blood. Police
claim that Yong Xin had turned and tried to fight and that the officer's
gun discharged accidentally. However, witnesses say that Yong Xin did not
struggle with the police and that in fact he had his back towards the
officer. An independent autopsy report confirms that Officer Steven
Mizrahi shot Yong Xin in the back of his head at point-blank range. Yong
Xin Huang, an honor student at Wagner High School in Manhattan, was the
youngest and only son of the Huang family.
Since Yong Xin was senselessly killed, the NYPD and the Brooklyn District
Attorney Charles Hynes have attempted to erase this state-sanctioned murder
from our minds and our memories. The DA refused to indict Officer Steve
Mizrahi, claiming that Yong Xin Huang's murder was just an "accident." Yet
the D.A.'s statement is riddled with inconsistencies and fails to address
the testimony of key eye witnesses who contradict Officer Mizrahi's
testimony.
Since the summer of 1995, Joyce and QingLan Huang, older sisters of
YongXin, have become active leaders in the struggle for justice and against
racist police violence. They have come together with families of other
police murder victims -- Anibal Carrasquillo, Frankie Arzuega, Nicholas
Heyward Jr -- to demand justice against racist police violence and DA
cover-up.
Keep YongXin's memory alive and remind our community of what his death was
about -- a tragic death at the hands of the police, a shameless cover-up by
the Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes, and community struggle against racist police
violence. And DEMAND justice for Yong Xin Huang and ALL victims of police
killings.
