This is one of those situations where there's a good concept but a bad execution. If you can guess from the title, the plot's pretty simple: Asuka's ex-boyfriend from Germany is the new pilot. He and Asuka start to hit it off again, just when she and Shinji are starting to get close. Wrought with jealousy and depression, Shinji's syncronization and social skills begin to fall. And just when Asuka realizes that her ex is a jerk and is trying his jackass way of getting her back, it's too late as Shinji's now too far over the edge. And, of course, an Angel attacks.
Second part deals with Asuka struggling with her feelings for Shinji while he struggles with a coma. And that's pretty much it.
Putting aside the obvious "Asuka-couldn't-have-had-a-boyfriend-in-Germany-or-at-all-because-she's-been-gaga-for-Kaji-her-whole-life"
deal, the idea's not too bad. The formula is followed and played out pretty
well. All the elements (jackass ex, jealous current boyfriend, woman caught
in the middle, and everyone else caught in the crossfire) are all used
without usually being overplayed too much. Shinji's feelings and reactions
to the situation are warranted, given the idea that
he and Asuka were starting to hit it off when the story starts. And
the old boyfriend is the usual part-time charmer/full-time jerk in his
manipulations to get what he wants, just like similar characters in other
stories. And when his plan backfires, he is rightfully told to piss off
and goes with shame (seeing as how this is rather expected of in these
kinds of stories, I doubt I'm giving away any spoilers).
Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier, the story has a bad execution. There's a lot of OOC-ness, especially on Asuka's part. True, her falling for her ex again is needed, but she falls for him just a bit too easily in my book. This is Asuka we're talking about; something caused her to break up with her ex (what, exactly, we're not clear on), and she can hold a grudge for a long time. Most of the dialogue is a bit on the corny side, even more so than usual in some fics. And Asuka's ex hardly makes an appearance in the second part, save for when he leaves and a flashback scene later on. You'd think he'd make some attempt to try and make up for what happened, or at least hang around for the repercussions.
The story's not bad, but it could have been written a little bit better. Its worth a read about once, but whether or not its worth keeping is up you, the reader.
Until Instrumentality is needed again...
