SEELE-03's review
Parts read: Prologue and Chapters 1-3

Well, I don’t know where to start on this, so I’ll just do a quick warning: This fic is not for the faint of heart. There is blood, gore, guts, and all the other toppings on a Big Mac. (C’mon, special sauce my a**.)

But that’s not the main point of the fic.

No, the main point of this is the demons. Before I continue, I know there are some of you who think that the Angels in Eva shouldn’t be taken seriously as Angels, and that it was just a figure of speech. But the series relies too heavily on Cabbalistic (Not the best spelling) material and more than a few Christian references to ignore it. But to continue...

‘Sins’ is an interesting continuation fic. Interesting in the fact that the prologue and the first chapter take place during the series. At chapter 2, it picks up after Kaworu has died. And EoE is totally ignored, by the way. Then, the dreaded ACC rears its head... only to turn out to be cute and likeable. Her description sounds like a younger Yui, and her personality is likeable, but it’s her perspective that makes her unique. Rather, her country’s perspective. Jennet hails from Scotland. Since it’s hard to cover up giant monsters attacking Tokyo-3 (and their equally giant bio-mech sparring partners) from the rest of the world, they have formed different opinions. In Scotland, they see the Evas as modern day knights. And, to the girls in Jennet’s school, they see Shinji as a modern day studmuffin. Jennet herself calls him cute, leading into a possible romantic interest. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Nevertheless, it’s the small details like the above that really make a fic worth reading.

Jennet, however, is not the end of the ACC. In fact, they seem to pop up quite frequently. Which brings me to the demons themselves. What? The new giant monsters attacking Tokyo-3 are characters? Yep, they sure are. While they don’t get flushed out in personality that much, they all deserve the title of ‘evil badass.’ They have intelligence. Unlike the Angels, who could ‘upgrade their parameters,’ the Demons have full-on smarts; including speech, strategy, and the ability to whoop major ass. As one Demon put it itself, ‘You have not known true combat.’ And combat it is. Blood and guts flow more freely than beer at happy hour. And the writer leaves no detail out. The battles are bloody, and all pain inflicted on the Eva is also directly inflicted on the pilot. Not that they rely on physical attacks alone. But I don’t want to spoil the story any further. In short, the Demons are in a class by themselves when it comes to being enemies.

Characterization is average, and all the characters aren’t too OOC. If they are, keep reading. It might not be what you think. Shinji is a bit braver, Misato a bit worried, and few other minor changes. Nothing to really de-rail you from enjoyment, unless you’re so die-hard Eva your eyes bleed if you don’t see it every day.

Also, the story’s focus still remains (for the most part) on Shinji. While several subplots are in there, they are taking their sweet time in developing. Rei has little screen time, by the way. So don’t expect to see much. But remember, only the prologue and chapters 1-3 are out yet. And the author has promised more screen time for Rei.

Spelling and grammar are above average. I found little or no mistakes in many parts. I’m a stickler for good grammar and spelling; and those that take the time to work on it get props in my book.

So, all in all, this is a good read, and the author has a good descriptive nature. Especially in the bloody parts. So, if you take recommendations, here’s mine.

Until Instrumentality is needed again.
