This fic is set in the EVA Files universe (also created by Joyce) which fuses NGE and X Files. Shinji and Asuka are in Mulder's and Scully's roles respectively. Misato kicks Kaji out of her apartment and moves in with Shinji, much to Asuka's and Kaji's displeasure. Hilarity ensues when the latter pair try to get their objects of affection back. There are few things as funny as a jealous Asuka.

Though the dark, mysterious conspiratorial atmospheres of the two series blend well into each other, in TSAM (its full title being 'There's Something about Misato & My Best Friend's Wedding from Hell'), the common elements here are a frustrated redhead and the percolating sexual tension between the two principal characters. TSAM itself is a parody of the EVA Files universe, making it an alternate-alternate universe.

The writing style can be overly spare at times with some points or gags not being developed as fully as their potential allows. But this fic provides a constant flow of offbeat, wacky comedy that shows originality and an ability to draw canny connections between series. I regard this piece as being one of the two greatest comedic gems produced by Joyce (the other being 'Urusai Asuka!' reviewed by Sean Gaffney at the EFRS).

In my view, the genius of Joyce Wakabayashi's writing is the ability to break the internal logic of the NGE series by 'changing the scenery'. The NGE cast remains fairly in-character but the plot is no longer prisoner of the internal logic of the NGE series. The latter ruins many fics with heavy-handed melodrama, pointless angst and pretentious introspection when authors lose control of their work.
