Chapter 8: Ami's Swim Team

The principal came up to Ami. "You forgot your book," he handed it to her. "Is there something troubling you? You usually don't forget stuff like this."

Serena rounded a corner and stopped. She saw Ami and the principal talking.

"I've heard you're helping some of the struggling students. I hope it's not getting in the way of your studies. If they're starting to pull you down..." the principal said. Serena sunk to the ground as she heard this.

"Even if you are the principal, I don't think you should say things like that," Ami said indignantly.

"I just meant that you should concentrate on your studies," the principal amended.

Serena thought about what the principal said. "Maybe I am holding Ami back."

After the principal left Ami thought to herself, "Just studying..."

Ami sat by herself on a park bench. Darien spotted her. "Hi, Ami. What are you thinking?"

"Darien," Ami replied. "If you take studying away from me, what's left?"

Darien was surprised.

"I'm sorry for saying such weird things," Ami sighed. "I've been thinking. My mother is a doctor, and ever since I was little I wanted to be a one too. So I studied hard, thinking it was my dream to be a doctor."

"Is it?"

"Maybe I don't have a dream."

"Why? It's always been your dream to become a doctor."

"But someone with a real dream is so bright. Serena has so many dreams and is so cheerful. I can't compete."

"She has more dreams than most people."

"There's no way I can become a good doctor if I'm only good at studying."

"It's a pity. If I had a doctor as cute as you, I might not mind getting shots."

"Darien, you don't like shots?"

"I hate them."

Ami laughed and started feeling better. She left to go swimming before studying. Darien said in parting, "You're brilliant the way you are."

Kaolinite watched from the air. She saw Ami go toward the pool, "The famous genius girl must have a pure soul."

Ami didn't see anyone else in the pool. She dove in and swam some laps. Michelle came up from the bottom of the pool and saw Ami. Ami saw Michelle and they both swam together.

When both stopped for air, Michelle asked, "Were you a fish in a previous life?"

"I don't know," Ami laughed.

"Let's race," Michelle challenged.

Erica shouted, "Ready! Go!"

Ami and Michelle raced to the other end of the pool. As they were racing, Michelle thought to herself, "This girl is fast."

Ami and Michelle reached the wall at the same time. Ami announced, "It's a tie."

Michelle swam to the edge of the pool silently and got out. As she dried herself with a towel, she said sharply, "Why did you slow down?"

"I'm sorry," Ami said and she ran out of the pool in tears.

Erica, who was laying on top of the diving board, said, "You've made her cry."

"I wasn't trying to," Michelle replied.

"She just wanted to become friends. She's the type of person who isn't confident enough in herself and so she can't face competition. And you teased her."

"I just wanted to have a real competition. I feel sorry for her."

Ami stood just inside the door of the changing room and heard all this.

The other girls were unsuccessfully trying to study. As Ami appeared, they rushed to her, each trying to get help. Serena stopped the and pushed them away. "No! You guys should all try to understand this yourself!"

Everyone stood in shock. "Should we take your temperature?" Rei asked.

"It's all right," Ami reassured. "You can ask me all you want."

Serena persisted. "Ami has to study a lot if she wants to become a doctor." Serena turned to Ami. "All you have to do is study."

"I forgot something," Ami mumbled and ran from the room. Serena saw tears in her eyes as she fled.

Rei and the others turned towards studying. "I forgot something too," Serena said and followed Ami.

Serena searched for Ami outside the temple. She thought she had said something wrong.

Ami sniffled by herself on the edge of a river. "Even Serena thinks I should only study."

Erica drove by on her motorcycle. "Michelle wants a rematch," she said as she stopped. "Do you want a ride?"

"No thanks. I'd rather walk."

"Suit yourself," Erica drove off.

Luna and Artemis saw Ami as they were walking down the street. "I'll follow her," Luna said as she dashed off after Ami.

Professor Chronos created another demon seed and sent it off.

Ami and Michelle prepared to race again. Luna stood outside the sports club, watching them.

Meanwhile, Artemis had found Serena. "Ami's at the sports club. She looks upset."

"Let's go, Artemis."

Ami and Michelle were racing the 100 meter free style swim. As they were racing Ami thought to herself, "She's fast. It's the first time I've raced against someone this talented. Why am I trying so hard? It's because I don’t want to run away again. If I give up, it would be running away. It's important to give things your best effort."

Ami and Michelle finished in a tie. Michelle asked, "How as it? Wasn't it great to go all out?"

"Yes," Ami smiled. "Thank you."

"This was fun. Let's swim again sometime."

As Ami was going to swim again, the demon seed entered the pool. The demon formed and attacked Ami.

Serena and Artemis arrived outside the sports club. Luna ran to Serena. "The demon has Ami!"

"Time to transform. Moon Cosmic Power!"

Sailor Moon appeared at the pool. "Stop! When I came to find my friend, I found someone who wasn't invited!"

Kaolinite appeared. "Take the girl's soul." Then she attacked Sailor Moon.

The demon got Ami's soul crystal. Sailor Moon saw this and said, "Give it back! Ami is nicer than anyone. She's smarter than anyone. Someday she’ll be the world's best doctor. And now she is a very good friend."

Kaolinite saw it wasn't the talisman. Tuxedo Mask threw a rose a Kaolinite. "I will not forgive someone who takes the soul of a young girl."

"Demon! Fight the Sailor brat and the Tuxedo dummy," Kaolinite ordered.

The demon attacked Tuxedo Mask. He knocked the demon into the pool.

"Moon Heart Spiral Collision!" The demon was destroyed. Sailor Moon returned Ami's soul.

Ami slowly recovered. "Thank you," she said.

Sailor Neptune and Uranus had been watching. Neptune sighed, "Unfortunately, it wasn't the talisman."

Uranus looked at her. "You think it's good it wasn't the girl."

Ami, Serena, and Darien stood outside. Serena said, "I'm sorry, Ami. Did I say something to hurt you?"

Ami shook her head. "No. I was feeling a little depressed, but because of Sailor Moon I think I can recover. Thank you very much."

"You welcome."

Darien asked, "Are you feeling better?"

"Yes. I found out it is important to try my best. I won't run away anymore."

Serena noticed the grins on both Ami's and Darien's faces. "Tuxedo Mask is my Tuxedo Mask."

"Oh I won't lose," Ami said.

"No! No! No!" Serena shouted.

"I won't lose."

"NO! NO!"

Ami sighed. "We can't do this forever. Let's study."
