Never Say Goodbye
Heero walked through the long, grayish corridor, ignoring those
around him. Right now, he wouldn't care if the whole planet blew up. His
main priority was a long-haired braided boy who was somewhere in one of
the rooms. Finally, he reached his destination, he knocked softly and walked
in.
"You're back."
The voice was soft and weak as if it took the owner of the voice
a lot of efforts to talk. Heero looked at boy laying on the bed, face white
as a ghost and thin, and his heart twisted painfully. "Aa."
Duo smiled but it didn't reached his eyes. "So, what did the doctor
say?" He looked at Heero and if he didn't know better, he thought Heero
looked as if he was about to cry.
"I'm dying, isn't it?" Heero didn't answer, but his silence answered
it all. Duo closed his eyes and sighed. He was not afraid of death -- he's
been courting death ever since Father Maxwell and Sister Helen died --
but he was afraid of leaving this sullen boy behind. This sullen, handsome
boy who had managed to capture his heart after years of putting up his
shields around his heart.
Duo had been surprised -- no, stunned -- when Heero had returned
his feelings. They had fought so hard to be together. After the war ended,
they thought they could be together forever, not worrying about anything,
be it politics, Relena or ....
Duo felt a single tear trikle down his cheeks. *It's not fair!
We fought so hard. Why now? Why? Why?*

She watched the Japanese pilot as he sank beside her charge, and
smiled. There could never be a better match between her Duo and Heero.
She reached out and gently brushed away that single tear. Duo blinked and
glanced around, not seeing her. He had never seen her, except maybe in
his dreams. She was always invisible to him and other mortals, she, his
Guardian Angel.
It amused her deeply to find herself associated as Death in Duo's
mind. But as Death or Guardian Angel, she would always love and guard him.
But how can she aid him now? With the real Death knocking on his door?

"I promise you, I will NOT let you leave me," Heero vowed in his
heart.
"Its time for your medicine," he said softly.
Duo frowned, a mere ghostly whisper of his once animated face.
"Do I have to?" he murmured. "It tastes bitter, and it makes me
sick."
"Then I'll kiss you until its sweet again," Heero managed a grin.
Duo returned a smile and made a face after swallowing his medication.
"Don't see why they can't just put it in the IV, would...would..,"
Duo's weak voice trailed off as his eyes fluttered and closed. The medication
was taking effect. Heero once again looked over the wasted body of his
lover, the only one who had ever succedded in tearing down the fortifications
around his heart.
"There has to be a cure," he whispered to himself. "The doctors
are wrong there must be a cure somewhere. I just have to find it."
Heero didn't realized he had fallen asleep until someone shook
him gently. He had slept kneeling beside Duo's bed and holding his lax
hand. His legs felt numb and he had to be helped up.
"You go and have a proper rest, Heero. We can watch over him,"
Quatre said softly. From behind him, Trowa nodded his agreement.
"Won't do you or Duo any good if you fall sick yourself," Trowa
said pointedly.
Sound logic, but it still hurt to leave Duo. What if he..no. He
must NOT think that. Duo would not die, never. NOt if he can help if.
"Keep him safe," Heero told them and slowly walked out, thinking
over his alternatives. If modern medicine had no cure, then he had to look
for unorthodox methods. Anything, if only it'll help Duo.

Pain, so much pain!!! He didn't know that there could be so much
pain.
Duo woke up, feeling as if someone is squeezing his chest. *Couldn't
breathe.* He struggle to gasp for breathe. He barely heard someone shouting
for a doctor and felt a gentle hand squeezing his. He wanted to call out
for help or pain but nothing would come out from his mouth and the blackness
swallowed him whole.
Quatre sighed in relief. *That was so close.* He had woken up when
he heard Duo desperately gasping for breathe. Trowa went for the doctor
and he stayed here, holding desperately on Duo's hand. *Don't die!! Please
don't die!!* At last, the doctor arrived and Quatre gladly let the doctor
do his best to eased Duo's pain.
He looked at Duo's face and he felt like crying. He looked nothing
like the Duo he knew, too thin and pale and in so much pain. His mouth
had lost his ever cheery grin, now that mouth is showing pain even in his
unconcious state. He used to be so animated and noisy, Quatre smiled at
that thought. Ever since, Duo's illness, he barely talked as it hurt his
chest and he could hardly moved his limbs.
Quatre closed his eyes and breathe in a shuddering breath. He could
still remember that day. They were at his house, celebrating New Year Eve.
Duo was talking and laughing as usual. They were having fun for the first
time. Hell, even Heero was laughing. Then all of a sudden, Duo was clutching
his chest as if in pain and gasping for breath. Quatre and the others were
laughing at him to stop triyng to fool them. To their horror, Duo coughed
out blood and lost conciousness. Heero rushed him to the hospital and after
several hours of waiting for the doctor, they found out Duo's sickness.
What angered them the most is that Duo knew about it but he never told
them.
When they entered the sick room, Quatre was prepared to scold him
but the sight of his friend shocked him to silence. *He looks like a ghost.*
That was the first thought that entered his mind and it tore at his heart.
Duo was like a brother he never had, though he never admitted it to anyone
and it hurt him to see Duo in so much pain. He had came to rely on Duo
for advise and comfort. Sure, Trowa could but only as a lover. Duo gave
him a feeling of a brotherly figure and now he was going away from his
life, just like... just like... just like his father. Quatre smothered
the strangled cry that tried to force its way out of his constricted throat.
Of the four of them, Heero suffered the most. He had watched Duo wasted
away day by day and couldn't do anything. Quatre opened his eyes, looking
determine. *K'so, Duo is not going to die, not if I can help it.*

Wufei had just arrived at the hospital and was surprised to see
doctors running about in a panic. He had left after watching Duo
and was determined to find a cure for his illness. Then he realized
the doctors were running towards the room that Duo was staying in.
He patiently waited, letting the doctors do their work, showing
no outward sign of his anxiousness. After the doctors left, he entered
Duo's room. Quatre sat by the bed, gently patting Duo's face with
a handkerchief. Trowa stood against the wall, watching, a frown marring
his brow.
"What happened? How is he?" Wufei asked softly.
Trowa looked at the young man that just came in. "He's getting
worse. Doctors say that it's not going to be long now."
"NO!!! He's NOT going to die!!!!" Quatre turned to
face the other two pilots, tears streaming dowm his cheeks. "We'll
find a way," he turned back to Duo and buried his face in his arms, "we
have to," he whispered fiercely.
"Where did you go anyway?" "Huh? Oh, I was researching about
any possible treatments or cures for Duo."
"Anything?" "No conventional means are possible. We'll have
to go the alternative way." Quatre stood up and looked at the two
conversing pilots.
"Then we'd better start looking."

"Damn those stupid scientists!!!!!" Heero banged his fists to the
table, making the laptop bounce. "What's taking them so long!?!?!" Heero
was fuming. Quatre was currently with Duo while Wufei and Trowa were out
trying to find a cure. Heero was in his room asking help fromthe scientists.
Suddenly, the screen in his computer blinked showing Dr. J's face.
"Heero, we're trying to make a cure to Duo's disease based on all the datas
we received from Wufei and Trowa, but as of now we're not having any luck.
He's a great pilot, but I do believe that we've done everything we can.
There's nothing we can do."
"NO! Try again!! Me and the others are still gathering information
to help Duo and we're not giving up. Please, Dr. J, there's a cure. Please
help us find it." Heero's voice was softer when he finished. "Please....."
Dr. J's face was solemn, "Heero, we'll try again, but we can't
promise you anything." He turned the communication off and whispered to
himself, "I'm sorry Heero, we'll try our best." Then he walked off and
met the other scientists.
Quatre knocked on Heero's door, "Heero, Duo wants to see you. I'm
going to Europe to do some research, Trowa's in United States right now
and Wufei's in China."
Heero opened the door and nodded at Quatre before leaving for the
hospital.
Quatre looked at Heero's retreating figure and his eyes flared
with determination. **We'll find the cure.** Then he left for the shuttle.
