The girl selected by the "Marduk Report" as a pilot for Evangelion Unit 2, the "second children". She is one quarter Japanese and three quarters German American. She is of US nationality but speaks Japanese, German, and English fluently, though she seems to favor German, as seen in episode 10 when the primary control language of Unit 2 was set as German. Also she seems to have some trouble reading Japanese. She came to Japan with Ryohji Kaji, Evangelion Unit 2, and the embryo of "ADAM" in the 8th episode.

Asuka has been trained as a pilot of Evangelion and has graduated from college in Germany. Her pride and seldf-confidence as a pilot is much higher than the other two pilots. Her reason for being a pilot is "to show her talent to the world". Being positive and active, she likes to show off her skills. Because of this she is constantly competing with Shinji who has been assigned to to Evangelion Unit 1. She doesn't like guys so she is always saying, "Guys are stupid and disgusting!". However, she is in love with Ryohji Kaji. When she first met Shinji, she slapped him due to an incident involving Touji
