Dear Dr. R. S. Makkar,
Nice to read your mail and my best wishes to your wife for a healthy =
baby.
Let me first tell you the expenditure.
Clinic consultancy (monthly visit) 5500 x 12 =3D 66 000
Last month of pregnancy 3 extra visit 9every week) 5500 x 3 =3D 16 500
Medical tests as and when required (basically all regular biochemical =
tests) 15 000 (approx)
Delivery charge including hospital accomodation =3D 350 000
Total expenditure =3D 447 500 YEN
City office repays =3D 300 000
Actual cost (approx) 147 500 yen
All costs are subjected to the condition that the delivery is nornal. if =
the delivery is ceaserian then insurance covers the cost but in any case =
the clinic would take from you 350 000Y for its case handling.
Next the part of repay by the city office: It usually takes 45 days and =
my advice would be to register the baby as soon as he/she is born, but =
usually 15 of every month all the applications are considered for =
repayment.
A month before you can request the Indian embassy for sending the for =
passport and as the baby is born you can then send the form with the =
nessary documents. This would save your time for procuring the form from =
the embassy.
Once you get the passport you have to go to the immigration office at =
Tokyo for the VISA. The time for getting the VISA is one month from the =
date of birth of the baby.
I think this information will help you. However, you are most welcome to =
contact me by phone as on and often you require my help.
Bye

This is just a suggestion for members of Indonet. Please donot reply to
this mail.
"Probably it is a good idea to address your response to the indonet mails
to the person who writes mail rather than writing as "reply" to all
indonet members. This will help U:
- not making your every communication public unless you want to.
- save other's time for reading and deleting unwanted mails.
- lessen internet load".
Thanks,

Hi friends,
I found this message very good. One of my friend has sent this to me. Hope
you will enjoy it.Please go through this important message.
Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each morning with
$86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening
deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the
day.
What would you do?
Draw out every cent, of course!!!!
Each of us has such a bank.
Its name is TIME.
Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds.
Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed
to
invest to good purpose.
It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft.
Each day it opens a new account for you.
Each night it burns the remains of the day.
If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours.
There is no going back.
There is no drawing against the "tomorrow".
You must live in the present on today's deposits.
Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and
success!
The clock is running.
Make the most of today.
To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade.
To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a
pre-mature baby.
To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly
newspaper.
To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to
meet.
To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the
train.
To realize the value of ONE SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an
accident.
To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who won a
silver medal in the Olympics.
Treasure every moment that you have! And treasure it more because
you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your
time.
And remember that time waits for no one.
Yesterday is history
Tomorrow is mystery
Today is a gift
That's why it's called the present!!
It's National Friendship Week!
Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed.
They make you smile and encourage you to succeed.
They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want
to open their heart to us.
Show your friends how much you care.....
Send this to everyone you consider a
FRIEND.
If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a friend for life.
Let's show our friends how much we appreciate them and what they
mean to us.
HAPPY FRIENDSHIP WEEK!!!!!!!!!
randhir S Makkar

Hello Everybody,
Firstly, thank you very much to all of you who have sent their resumes
promptly and inquiries to me.
More than forty people responded to my request, surprisingly a great
response.
Secondly, I would like to acknowledge that I have received all the
resumes and informing you that I have given most of those resumes to one
company last week and hopefully, if there is any interest, they will
contact us. In the near future I will be in discussion with another
company (consultancy).
Lastly, if you know people in computer area, with relevant experience in
software development or programming or networking or hardware
maintenance please feel free to inform them to contact me asap regarding
working in Japan.
Once again thanks a lot for the cooperation.
Good luck for job hunting and best regards,
Sanjay
_______If you have sent me one page resume then no need to read any
further_______________
Just a note, most of those resumes were in the format I forwarded to the
list (about 25 resumes) but, unfortunately, some of them were more than
one page. Some people just dumped their 10 or
20 pages pre-formatted resumes as an attachment. It was perfectly OK
with me but unfortunately for employers point of view it might not be
worth to read 10 or 20 pages for the preliminary screening
(for example when employer was looking for somebody who could work
immediately, as was the case for a computer networking or hardware
engineer, but the applicant was not in Japan). In order to find out
where the applicant is living currently, one has to scan 10 or 20 pages
and dig out the relevant information patiently.
According to the marketing paradigm, if one is trying to market
something (in job seeking situation, their skills) then it is more
effective to provide what customer (or employer) is looking for or
seeking (satisfy what the customer wants, in current context: employer).
We have to be a little bit professional in our approach when we
communicate with international community. One does not have to tell or
list everything to every employer, especially if some of the things are
not related to that profession or might not be interesting or required
for a specific employer.
For example, I have a MSc. (Organic Chemistry), MBA (Marketing) and
MPhil (Int. Bus. and
Marketing) but when I apply for a job in management area I don't talk
about MSc. (Chemistry) degree at all. I agree it is just one way of
presenting oneself and not necessarily every one has to follow it. Every
one has their own way of approaching things. I have no intentions of
imposing my personal way of doing things to others. So please don't take
it seriously. I thought that some people might have not realised it or
did not have time and might continue to do it in the future as well.
Further, employer usually do not go back to the applicant and complain
about the presentation style or lack of or insufficient information.
Therefore, I am sharing my views with the list members, which might help
some people.
I KNOW MOST OF YOU ALREADY KNOW ABOUT IT WHAT I WROTE, SO PLEASE DON'T
TAKE IT LITRALLY! IT IS JUST A REMINDER ON PART!

Dear members,
Hello everyone. Its 10 months since we started INDONET and thought it
will be good to provide a feedback on INDONET.
(1) A rough statistics of communication over INDONET since start is as
follows:
Month Total. mails No. Unique
No Contributors
Oct'97 12 11
Nov'97 25 16
Dec'97 9 8
Jan'98 16 11
Feb'98 4 4
Mar'98 39 20
Apr'98 27 12
May'98 30 20
Summary 165 46
In all there were 46 unique contributors, which means at least 1 in 2
people did something. This is contrary to the normal feeling that most
us can only to be a spectator and we feel happy about it. Thanks for all
the contributions.
I would also like to note there were nearly as many mails addressed to
me, asking various things right from suggestions on travel agents, Hato
bus, computer shops to emergency needs, as there was on INDONET. If we
can channelise even ½ this e-mails to INDONET, we can have an active
information exchange that can genuinely help community as a whole.
(2) E-mail Log: Past e-mails of INDONET are now in Webpage. We started
to keep e-mail logs from October'97. We plan to update on a
monthly/bi-monthly basis. This will provide some continuity for those
who are joining us new as well as provide reference to old issues.
(3) Membership: If there are people who would like to become members of
INDONET, please provide them with necessary information on how to become
member of INDONET or our web page address. INDONET is for all those who
care and want to care for other Tsukuba Indians.
(4) Posting: INDONET guidelines are available in the web page. Anything
that nurtures/develops growth within us is welcome. What to post is
something we have to discover within this constraint.
Often it has been said we don’t express even critical matters, (except
on politics). Kindly take time to express your personal opinion on
matters where it is required. Please express it clearly so we can avoid
lot of unnecessary misunderstanding. This is necessary to find
majority’s opinion.
(6) Forwarded Mails: Please add a small note as to why u are posting it
in INDONET and what is it u liked about it or want others to read.

Hello, the mail you just posted as a humor story to Indonet, is a waste
of time and intellect. Please think before posting to the net whether it
is really contributing to the net or not. Don't waste the time, disk
space and resources of Indonet for unnecessary mails, please. I hope

Thanks for your mail, anyway.

Dear Mr. Sanjay Seth,
I don't know whether this mail will qualify the guidelines, but I have to
say that I do not share your views. I would be happy if you showed more
tolerence to what others might like to share with you. A joke once in a
while doesn't waste my time. And I would not redicule anybody by saying
that a few bytes wasted my disk space. I have other things to waste the
space, some into tens of megabytes!
I read a mail like yours to almost every mail posted on Indonet, and I have
to say that it is not a very scoial behaviour. Everything posted on any
network cannot be of interest to you. But we don't ask poeple to shut up
just because it is of no interest to us. Or because you are the busiest
person on us (in which case you need not subscribe - nobody forced you to!).
Thanks for the understanding.

Hi Sanjay Seth
There should be some humar in between our routine work. If not, there is no difference between human and animal or robot (the later two can not think of humor).
Anyway, thanks for educating to our Indians. I hope you will reward "Bharata Ratna" or some "Seva Pathak" for your contribution towards our Indians and intellectual forum.

This is a sugesstion to many past mails.
Instead of telling what NOT TO POST, why don't we show by example, WHAT
TO POST. Why don't we just post whatever we feel is right and leave
the question of appropriateness to INDONET to organising body.
If u want to be part of us, there is a way and its in the guidelines.
You can also express ur views privately to me, if u don't have time to
be part of us.

To,
Mr. Alok Singh, Gabbar Singh and Indonet members,
Firstly, I apologize if I made unnecessary comments.
I am not against any humor or jokes but critiquing any culture, country
or group is not a good idea
even for the sake of making jokes or humor story. (Poets: Kaka
Hatarashi, Surender Haryanvi,
Acting: Mr. Beens, Torasan, Charlie Chaplain etc.)
Secondly, do you share with me that there are many humorous story and
joke about "Sardarjis" in
India. Let me explain you what are the implications of such jokes and
humorous stories, which are
socially acceptable in India. Nobody objects those jokes or humorous
stories in the northern part of
India. A couple of years ago I met some fellow Sardarjis in Australia. I
felt guilty when they told me
how they and their friends felt about "Sardarji's" jokes, which are
quite common in schools etc. One
of them was so emotionally moved that his eyes were filled with tears.
When they were growing up,
they had bad feeling towards fellow friends, which they never expressed.
I think we should accept
that it not a good practice. It might not make any sense to the general
public (including me, when I
was in India) but if we put our legs in their shoes I am sure some of us
can imagine their degree
humiliation with those jokes.
Thirdly, we should not take Internet communication so lightly, although
I agree it is very primitive
means of communication, which didn't exist a decade ago except
universities in Western countries.
Recently, one of Bill Gate's e-mail messages, which was written to a CEO
of Computer Company, was
used against Microsoft by US Attorneys General (during Internet browser
controversy court case in
USA). In that e-mail message, Bill Gate asked one computer manufacturer
to bundle Internet
Explorer with OS instead of Netscape browser. He was willing to
compensate for it by money.
Some extracts from C|Net news story: I used "Bill Gates E-mail" as a key
word in their news search
option.
[App. Exhibit 26, Bill Gates e-mail to the
Microsoft Executive Committee, May 26, 1995, p. 1 (at
MS6 5004550),
quoted at Memorandum of the United States in Support of
Petition, dated
October 20, 1997, at 33. To the extent that is true,
Microsoft may have
sufficient incentive to use its monopoly power in
operating system software to
crush or co-opt the competitive challenge from a new
technology.
Second, the government brought forward evidence
indicating that Microsoft
had itself contemplated "leveraging" its greatest
strategic asset, "Windows'
market share" to help its Internet Explorer product win
the browser war.
December 20, 1996 e-mail from Jim Allchin to Paul
Maritz, quoted at pp.
12-13 of Reply Brief of Petitioner United States Any
such leveraging, if
allowed to proceed unchecked during the pendency of
this litigation, could
produce lasting harm in the marketplace, given the
dominance of Microsoft's
Windows 95 operating system software. For complete
story please go to the bottom of
the web site at
http://www.news.com/SpecialFeatures/Continued/0,6,19615_2,00.html]
Frothily, all of us know about the " THE HERBAL PETROL"-HUMOR?
Lastly, I am not sure who should be awarded the "Bharata Ratna" or some
"Seva Pathak" , the
person who wrote the following or the one who invented the new OS
(operating system in
India). Please read the following news and vote!
Thanks for the replying to my comments and best regards, Sanjay

The Indian Psyche
Padmanaban, G.
The recent nuclear test explosions
have created a tremendous euphoria in
India and expected condemnation, led
by the United States. An average
Indian does not associate the test
with security concerns or power politics. Right-thinking Indians know that
our priorities are such things as health, education, and containment of
population.
Why then the euphoria? India, despite an having an ancient culture and a
functioning, stable, large democracy and being a hunting ground for
technically qualified people, has been persistently represented by the
United States and the West as the home of poverty, filth, disease, and
backwardness. There have been few occasions when progress made in India has
been depicted by the Western media without bias or sarcasm. India is
self-sufficient in food production. Its space program and other programs
have improved communication and information systems tremendously. It is
fighting a big battle to remove age-old social inequalities. The Indian
economy has been stable, and Indians have taken to computers and software
with ease. The entrepreneurial dynamism of Indians is second to none. India
supplies highly qualified cheap labor to the United States. Indians enjoy
freedom of expression and dissent, although we would like some of our
leaders to keep their mouths shut, at least for a while.
A feeling of alienation permeates segments of the Indian society that have
anything to do with the West, the United States in particular. The general
perception among Indian scientists in leading institutions, most of whom are
U.S.-trained, is that they are being discriminated against. Research papers
sent to top international journals from India seem to be reviewed with a
bias. Even if I manage to publish one of my papers in one of the best
journals, it will seldom be quoted or have an impact, unless I have a
U.S.-Western pedigree or a connection with an inner circle. There seems to
be an inherent disbelief in the West that good research can be done in
India. Even if I am invited to deliver a lecture at an international
research conference, I am made to feel like an outsider or am aware that I
have been invited to satisfy a condition that someone from a developing
country be included for the conference to be eligible for funds from an
international agency. My passport at the immigration counter in most
European countries is scrutinized with extra care and often with a hostile
attitude, even when I have adequate proof that I will not stay for more than
3 days. There are, of course, exceptions, but exceptions do not make the
rule.
As director of a pioneering research institution in India, I am aware that
we are threatened with sanctions. Some months ago (long before the nuclear
tests), newspapers published articles saying that the Indian Institute of
Science is on the watchlist of the United States because we are considered
to be a think tank for India's defense efforts. We are an academic
institution and carry out intellectually challenging problems in fields
ranging from particle physics to ecology. Yet, an Indian order sent to
Silicon Graphics causes a U.S. embassy official to investigate. We were
denied a Cray computer for more than a decade (now we are happy we did not
buy these heavyweights). Our scientists are appalled by how the United
States, which values intellectual challenges and academic freedom, can have
such a discriminatory attitude toward a country struggling to develop its
science. We are often ignored by international funding agencies as
"developed" when it comes to support for science. Our scientists are worried
that the United States may put an embargo on visas for scientists and
scholars from India. Already, the supply of research samples from U.S.
government laboratories has been put on hold.
India has many, many problems, but we are tired of being depicted in the
West as having negative qualities. Given this treatment, one clutches at any
"victory" that makes one feel like an entity to be counted. It can be a win
in cricket, a chess match, or a beauty contest, or even a nuclear blast.
Sanctions are self-defeating and counterproductive. India needs
understanding, not threats or sympathy. We are a warmhearted people with
tradition and capabilities. And to top it off, India has great admiration
for America and Americans!

Hello!
I am very sorry that just now I despatched two emails by mistake!
First one, without checking, I was in the idea that it is to Dr. Thakur only.
While despatching was in progress, I come to know that it is indonet.
While checking again, instead quitting I press for sending!
But as the content looks to be nice and as I would be out of the city for
5 days, I was doing hurriedly!
So, if any incovenience has caused, I am sorry for that.

Hi Indonetters,
A Japanese friend of mine working on developing of
wood and wood-based products for building construction, interior decoration
etc. The main aim of the group is to develop material which is ameniable
for the residents e.g. such products which do not pass vibrations/tappings
to the adjoing rooms, light in weight, withstand sudden impacts etc. etc.
He is interested to have a english name to his group. Can somebody suggest
me an appropriate name for the same? By the way he is working in wood
physics section.
Thanks in advance,
Ramesh Thakur

I have been using the following website to obtain latest financial news

Does anyone know of sites that can provide general news, that are almost

visiting the USA, then be aware of it.

THE HINDU ONLINE
U.S. institute clarifies on scientists' expulsion
Date: 26-07-1998 :: Pg: 07 :: Col: b
By Sridhar Krishnaswami
WASHINGTON, July 25.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology at Gaithersbug,
Maryland (U.S.), has clarified that the seven expelled Indian
scientists
were not involved in projects associated with nuclear weapons or
missile
programmes. The scientists had been working at the NIST on two semi-
conductor manufacturing projects and a ceramics processing
project. A
spokesman for the NIST said that of the seven scientists, one
had already
left on July 9 and another was planning to leave the country
``anyway''
having completed his work.
In the course of the ongoing review of science and technology
cooperation
with India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the nuclear tests,
the Clinton
Administration blacklisted three of the projects at the NIST and
put on
hold four more projects it was running in collaboration with the
National
Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. The NIST is run by the Department of
Commerce and has 30 Indian scientists. The NIST does not have
collaborative arrangements with Pakistan.
The seven scientists asked to leave are from the Bhabha Atomic
Research
Centre, Trombay, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai,
and the Indian Institute of Technology. These institutions are
among the 62
in India blacklisted by the U.S. Department of Energy. The list
includes the
Centre for Aeronautical Systems Studies and Analysis, Bangalore, the
Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, Chennai, the
Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad, the Indira
Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, and the Indian Space
Research Organisation.
Five institutions from Pakistan have been placed in a similar
category.
According to a report in the media, another Indian scientist
working in
Illinois has also been asked to leave. The scientist from the
BARC who is a
post doctoral student, has been using the Agronne National
Laboratory's
intense pulsed neutron source.
The U.S. Department of Energy has said that the sanctions
required the
suspension of all DoE-funded activities with the entities of
India and
Pakistan, except in the realm of humanitarian assistance. All
visits from
Indians and Pakistanis from the blacklisted institutions must be
put on hold
as also high level visits by DoE personnel to the two South
Asian nations.
All American universities which get funding from the DoE are
also required
to seek guidance from it on ties with the blacklisted institutions.
The U.S. State Department is, meanwhile, continues to maintain
that the
expulsion of the scientists has to do with the ongoing review of
Science and
Technology ties with India and Pakistan, especially with
entities in India
dealing with nuclear weapons and missile programmes. This is to
ensure
that the U.S. is not involved in ``inappropriate cooperation''
with the two
countries, a Clinton Administration official said. The
Administration, it was
pointed out, had to ensure in the aftermath of the nuclear
tests, that science
and technology cooperation with India and Pakistan did not go
against
U.S. non-proliferation objectives.
The following is the list of institutions under sanction as
given in the U.S.
Energy Secretary, Mr. Federico Pena's memorandum, with the notation:
``this list is not exhaustive and will be updated at a later
date'':

For those who have no idea of INDONET, I include the welcome message we
send to prospective members. INDONET is for the welfare of Researchers
in Tsukuba area. I am contributing one service -- which is providing the
network service. Other members have contributed/are contributing in
various ways.
For sometime (8 months@!), I have been trying to link KISHAN with
INDONET. I have requested KISHAN to include the e-mail id
"indonet@kk.tkb.n-koei.co.jp" in there mailing list. I want Tsukuba
members to benefit from good mails of the KISHAN. If u consider this
request seriously, I and many memebers of INDONET will be happy.
I appreicate KISHAN activities. However it has to become more focused on
serving Univ.Students/staffs of Tokyo instead of trying to influence
every walk of Kanto people.
BTW, please remove my home e-mail address from KISHAN
(pp2k-kmr@asahi-net.or.jp), which I never asked u to register in the
first place.
