Dear Friends:
This is a copy of the message that we had sent to a number of Indians
staying
in Tsukuba area. As we understand that earlier mailing list was not
complete
and the "indonet" has access to a broader
community we are posting the invitation for Diwali get together once
again.
Those who intend to join please respond latest by Monday, 27 Oct. as the
list
of participants is the prerequisit to reserve JICA Hall that has been
selected as a Venue for this event.
_______________________________________________________________________
We are planning to have a get together on the 1st of Nov., Saturday
(evening).
This is to celebrate Diwali as well as to bid farewell to Uday and Dr.
Rao
(JICA) who are leaving in mid Nov.
As it is getting cold outside, we are planning to have this get together
some
where indoors. Therefore JICA HAll has been .
As far as the pogramme is concerned, how about firing some crackers,
having some
good food, and enjoying each others company! (some games might also be
arranged). Every one is requested to bring some prepared dishes, whatever
you
wish to. And like previous occasions drinks, crackers and disposables
will be contributory.
Please let us know of your willingness to participate ASAP so that this
programme
could be given a final shape.
We would also appreciate your opinion on giving small contributory
farewell
gifts to Uday and Dr. Rao whom most of us might be meeting for the last
time.

> INTERFAITH DIALOG SEMINAR

> Date: 9 November 1997 (Sunday) 2-5pm

> Place: 3F Tsukuba Information Center, Tsukuba Center Building
>
> Topic: What is the Purpose of Human Life according to different
> religious traditions
>
> FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
>
> Towards An Interfaith Understanding
>
> In a pluralistic world of competing ideas and interests,
> one major source of strife has been ethenic/culture
> intolerance (often viewed in terms of religious intolerance).
> One prerequisite for moving beyond such strife is coming to a
> mutual understanding of the beliefs and worldviews of persons
> from differing religious and cultural backgrounds. As a small
> beginning towards that lofty goal, representatives of
> Christianity and Islam will present their understanding of
> the Purpose of Human Life. If adherents to other religious/
> philosophical persuasions would like to join in making
> similar presentations, they are welcome. This conference
> will be patterned after the interfaith conferences developed
> by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The format will be that
> of a 10-15 minutes presentation by a representative of each
> faith followed by a time of questions and answers. There will
> also be introductory and closing comments together with a
> period of informal discussion around light refreshments.
>
> The purpose of this exercise is simply to try to understand
> each other's concepts without arguing against them. Thus this
> is not to be a debate trying to prove beliefs other than one's
> own to be wrong. The purpose is to present in an understandable
> way the conceptual bases for each tradition and to hopefully
> remove at least a few of the misperceptions many people have
> towards faith traditions other than their own. Likewise
> questions from the audience must be non confrontational in
> tone and designed to elicit information and clarification,
> not debate. Plans are to repeat this dialog on various issues,
> such as views on the origins of good and evil, the status and
> role of men and women, etc. All with the view towards better
> understanding each religious tradition in context.

Dear colleagues,
This is regarding Kanto Diwali festival. More than 2000 people
participated in the festival and was organised on a really grand scale.
The food,
the social programs, live sitar music, food and the door prizes were
all
excellent.
Many Indians from Tsukuba went to attend. I am sure those who went
would not have missed smartly dressed Dr Pradeep Deota receiving
everyone
at the entrance (He was one of the volunteers).
Dr. Pradeep Deota also received special prize during the festival for
coming runner-up in ICAT organized carom tournament. I take this moment
to congratulate him on
everyone's behalf.
Hope everyone will be able to attend the Nov. 1st get together and
nurture the fledgling fellowship among Tsukuba Indians.
Best regards
kalyan Kumar J.

If you are planning to make a web-page of your own and want to convert
some of your photos to digital images, you can get that done through
shops such as "camera kimura" or "biggu camera". You must have relevent
negatives. The last time I did there were two companies offering such
service through these shops: Fuji and Kodak. With Fuji you can get it
in
CD or floppy disk and they provide GIF images. Kodak does it in cd-rom
and use a special PCD image format. You need a PCD compatible image
software (such as coreldraw) to read kodak images.
The cost was 500yen + 100 yen per photo.

On saturday, Nov'8th, I went to see an drama in CAPIO theater in
Tsukuba
titled "GLENGARY GLEN ROSS".
The play was supposed to have won a Pulitzer prize#@@# and was
performed
by a group of armature researchers and english teachers under the name
"Bingo Parallax Ltd". The number of people who came to watch was small,
50 people. 60% of the people were westerners; 40% were Asian origin.
While I have not read the original play, some parts of the drama was
disquieting, because of the way they used the names "Indian" and
"patel"
to mean people mean/ selfish.
My personal opinion is, while evidences can be found for mean human
beings in every race, it is racial to stereotype "Indians" as mean or
to
speak derogatorily in public of any group of people. Further it is
disturbing to notice resident foreigners speaking ill of another class
of foreign residents, that too, in a place like Japan. In case you feel
similarly, please send me an e-mail expressing your feelings and a
request to avoid such shows.
If, there is sufficient support, I can formally express it to the town
office, CAPIO theater and Bingo Parallex to avoid similar
incidences in future.

Hello friends,
I am writing to some of you the first time but I have been asked to do
so
by Mr. Kalyan Kumar J. of Nippon Koei with whom you might be familiar.
So
here are some interesting things which I had posted to Kishan today and
am
cut/pasting here for all those who are interested::
***************************************************
Those interested in checking Internet TV may try NHK's page at;
http://www6.nhk.or.jp/world/dayline-e.html
If you do not have the realaudio player (free download), the link is
available from the same page. Also, you may hear the NHK news in Hindi
as
well from the "Audio" link on the NHK homepage. For those interested in
Indian music and news straight from India,
http://www.corumradioasia.com/program.html and http://www.aiir.com/ are
wonderful links.
**************************************************
A very intersting article in Today's Times of India editorial page is at
:
http://www.timesofindia.com/today/edit4.htm.
But last time I gave such a link, the "today" changed to some other
day
and I received a boquet of epithets. So this time I am pasting the
entire
thing here as well, even if it takes a few more bits & bytes..;

Laser-powered spacecraft
A laser-powered test rocket took to the air for the first
time
recently.
Although only 15cm in diameter and about 50g in weight,
the
10in long, flying-saucer shaped Lightcraft could be the
forerunner
of a new breed of low-cost spacecraft that travel into
orbit on
``highways of light'', according to Professor Leik Myrabo,
the
designer, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in
Troy,
New
York.
The proposed technology works by directing a rapidly
pulsing
laser beam to the underside of the Lightcraft, which is,
in
effect, a
parabolic mirror that reflects and focuses the laser to
the
ring-like
``absorption/propulsion'' chamber. The energy is
concentrated,
heating the inlet air to such extreme temperatures that
it
becomes
ionised and bursts into glowing plasma that is then
forced
through
a nozzle, propelling the craft forward.
In the full-size craft, this ``air-breathing'' mode
would
accelerate
the craft to a velocity approaching Mach 5 and an altitude
of
about 100,000ft. At high altitude air becomes too thin so
the
Lightcraft switches into rocket mode using an on-board
supply of
liquid hydrogen or nitrogen, in conjunction with the
laser,
to reach
speeds of about 17,000mph or Mach 25 to escape the
Earth's
gravitational pull.
Throughout the flight, the direction of laser beam is
constantly
adjusted to keep it precisely aligned with the spacecraft.
Myrabo's work could lead to passenger-carrying,
hypersonic
saucers that use lasers or microwaves, possibly beamed
from
satellites, not just for propulsion but also to
manipulate
the airflow
by projecting a concentrated energy beam ahead of the
fast-moving craft.
This so-called ``air spike'' has the effect of creating
a
pocket of
low-density, low-pressure hot air that dramatically reduces
the
drag and thermal loads normally associated with such
speeds. An
added benefit is that air trapped between the rim of the
saucer
and shock wave can be used in the propulsion system.

Sunday Times)

Dear KK,
This incident is very disturbing indeed, and you have my full support
in
making a formal protest.
We should also try to find a copy of the original play to fix the
responsibility - to make sure whether these names have been used in the
original play in the same manner or the original context.

Hello friends,
Here are some interesting things which I had posted to Kishan today and am
cut/pasting here for all those who are interested::
***************************************************
Those interested in checking Internet TV may try NHK's page at;
http://www6.nhk.or.jp/world/dayline-e.html
If you do not have the realaudio player (free download), the link is
available from the same page. Also, you may hear the NHK news in Hindi
as
well from the "Audio" link on the NHK homepage. For those interested in
Indian music and news straight from India,
http://www.corumradioasia.com/program.html and http://www.aiir.com/ are
wonderful links.
**************************************************
A very intersting article in Today's Times of India editorial page is at
:
http://www.timesofindia.com/today/edit4.htm.
But last time I gave such a link, the "today" changed to some other
day
and I received a boquet of epithets. So this time I am pasting the
entire
thing here as well, even if it takes a few more bits & bytes..;

Laser-powered spacecraft
A laser-powered test rocket took to the air for the first
time
recently.
Although only 15cm in diameter and about 50g in weight,
the
10in long, flying-saucer shaped Lightcraft could be the
forerunner
of a new breed of low-cost spacecraft that travel into
orbit on
``highways of light'', according to Professor Leik Myrabo,
the
designer, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in
Troy,
New
York.
The proposed technology works by directing a rapidly
pulsing
laser beam to the underside of the Lightcraft, which is,
in
effect, a
parabolic mirror that reflects and focuses the laser to
the
ring-like
``absorption/propulsion'' chamber. The energy is
concentrated,
heating the inlet air to such extreme temperatures that
it
becomes
ionised and bursts into glowing plasma that is then
forced
through
a nozzle, propelling the craft forward.
In the full-size craft, this ``air-breathing'' mode
would
accelerate
the craft to a velocity approaching Mach 5 and an altitude
of
about 100,000ft. At high altitude air becomes too thin so
the
Lightcraft switches into rocket mode using an on-board
supply of
liquid hydrogen or nitrogen, in conjunction with the
laser,
to reach
speeds of about 17,000mph or Mach 25 to escape the
Earth's
gravitational pull.
Throughout the flight, the direction of laser beam is
constantly
adjusted to keep it precisely aligned with the spacecraft.
Myrabo's work could lead to passenger-carrying,
hypersonic
saucers that use lasers or microwaves, possibly beamed
from
satellites, not just for propulsion but also to
manipulate
the airflow
by projecting a concentrated energy beam ahead of the
fast-moving craft.
This so-called ``air spike'' has the effect of creating
a
pocket of
low-density, low-pressure hot air that dramatically reduces
the
drag and thermal loads normally associated with such
speeds. An
added benefit is that air trapped between the rim of the
saucer
and shock wave can be used in the propulsion system.

Sunday Times)

Dear Kalyan Kumar,
I agree with you . We should talk not only to town office but with
the
people who presented the drama. We must know what made them to do this.
Well, before that let us discuss with Indian Embassy.

I really don't think that the original play can include such derogatory
remarks on a particular country or community. If so, we should also
express our feelings even to the writer/director of the play in
addition
to the authorities of Capio. As the same play could be held in any part
of the world and carry the same message all over.
And I also support Dr Satya Singh's feeling aboout registering our
STRONG protest to the concerned authorities. One should never forget
that the country/community to which they are referring to is the GREAT
land which has given birth to great nation-builders like Mahatma Gandhi
respected all over the world.

Dear friends,
you can browse all Indian Newspapers from a single page and even
customize
it at: http://www.samachar.com/
Food for thought;
-------------------------
To laugh is to risk appearing a fool,
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out to another is to risk involvement,
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas and dreams before a crowd is to risk their
loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return,
To live is to risk dying,
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk failure.
But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to
risk
nothing.
The person who risks nothing,
does nothing,
has nothing,
is nothing.
He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he cannot learn, feel,
change,
grow or live.
Chained by his servitude he is a slave who has forfeited all
freedom.
Only a person who risks is free.
so.....start taking risks ??...............
