The Scouts in Myth

Sailor Moon/Serena/Serenity
Greek = Selene
Selene is the goddess of the moon. She is often equated with the Roman goddess Diana. There are a few differences between the two though. Diana was a huntress and a virgin. Selene didn't hunt and she had 50(!)children with Endymion (as far as I can tell, none were named Rini)and a couple with Zeus. She is also one of only two scouts to actually be named after a woman.

Sailor Mercury
Greek = Hermes
Hermes was the god of good luck and wealth. He was also the god of commerce, of roads, of sleep, of dreams and of fertility. He is credited with inventing the lyre. He is the messenger and herald of the gods and the conductor of the souls of the dead to Hades.

Sailor Mars
Greek = Ares
To the Romans, Mars was one of their chief gods. He exalted military power and glory. To the Greeks, he was a blustering and brutal coward. One thing Ares was best know for was the fact that he had an affair with the goddess Aphrodite which was spied on by all the gods of Mount Olympus.

Sailor Jupiter
Greek = Zeus
Jupiter was the supreme ruler of Roman mythology. He was a sky god. He was god of rain and hurler of thunderbolts. Any place struck by lightning was sacred to him. He was the guardian of property and the guarantor of oaths. He was also known by the name Jove

Sailor Venus
Greek = Aphrodite
Venus was actually the name of an obscure Italian goddess of beauty and charm. Since the 3rd century B.C., she has been identified with Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, affection and all the impulses that bind men together. One of the stories of her birth was that she arose from the sea-foam. As Venus, she is more directly sexual. She was also one of the main causes of the Trojan War. She is the only other scout named after a female.

Sailor Uranus
The sky. Son and husband of Gaea (the earth) and father of the Titans, the Cyclops and other monsters. He was overthrown and castrated by his son Cronus.

Sailor Neptune
Greek = Poseidon
Neptune is actually the Italian god of water, rain and the fertility it brings. Poseidon is Zeus' brother. He was originally god of earthquakes and water, but eventually became the supreme god of the sea. He is represented as tempestuous, vindictive, and always raging. He carries a trident as his symbol. He is the god of horses and the father of the winged horse Pegasus.

Sailor Saturn
Greek = Cronus
Another Italian god. Saturn is a king god, father to many of the other gods. His wife was the goddess of fruitfulness. A festival was held in his honor, during which slaves would be served by their masters. Cronus was the son of Uranus (the one who castrated him), a Titan, and at one point had control of the world. He is father to all of the major Greek gods, including Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Hestia and Demeter. He was killed by Zeus.

Sailor Pluto
Greek = Hades
Pluto is one of the names of Hades, god of the underworld. He is the brother of Zeus. He is gloomy, stern and deaf to all appeals. There were no sacrifices made to him. He raped Persephone, taking her back to the underworld with him. Her mother Demeter (goddess of vegetation) was so distraught that she let all of the food wither. Zeus, not wanting the foolish mortals to die, was able to arrange a deal where Persephone would spend half of the year with Hades and half on Earth. The name Hades eventually came to represent the place more than the god, but in Greek mythology, hell is more dull than horrible. Pluto is also equated with the god Plutus, the personification of wealth.

Prince Endymion
Endymion is a beautiful young shepherd who is loved by the moon and who lies in eternal sleep. In one version of myth, he asks Zeus if he can sleep forever and so remain forever young. In another, Selene puts him to sleep so that she might visit him in the quiet. In yet another, Selene has 50 children with him (tough to do when the guy's asleep, I would think!)

Luna
Luna is the Roman goddess of the moon, the equivalent of Selene.

Artemis
Okay, here's where it gets a little loopy. Serena, Luna, Artemis and Diana (moon and the three kitties) are all the same person. Go fig. Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo. She is a virgin, hunter goddess, always carrying a quiver and bow. She is the goddess of chastity, and capable of inflicting or healing sickness. She is the goddess of birth (virgin, chastity and birth - I don't get it) and the protector of the unborn and the newly born. Because of being the goddess of birth, she is equated with the lunar cycle, and therefore Selene.

Diana
Diana is almost identical to Artemis, except that she's Roman and isn't related to Apollo.
