Mai the Psychic Girl - Summaries - Parts 1-10

Part 1 - The Psychic Girl

Mai is dreaming that she's being chased through a forest, and is very relieved to wake from her nightmare.

Meanwhile in the Swiss Alps, the secret international society known as the Wisdom Alliance is discussing the results of their latest PK tests - psychokinetic tests.   There are only five people in the world with eight point rankings:  Baion Yuwon, 14, Mongolia
        David Perry, 15, USA
        Turm Garten, 13, East Germany
        Grall Hong, 16, Vietnam
        Mai Kuju, 14, Japan
The children are all placed under surveillance.

Mai plays around with her powers at school (surprising the batter in a baseball game by stopping the ball in mid-air!).  On the way home, her friends notice two men following them.  This leads to a brief chase until Mai gives them the slip, with some help from her powers.  Her father returns home from a business trip, and is startled to hear of a test she'd taken at school - which he recognises as a PK test - and of the men who'd followed her.  The next morning Mai heads for school - but her father becomes suspicious of a car full of men, and with good reason!  The men try to follow Mai, but Kuju intercepts them.  After a brief fight (go Kuju!) he learns that they work for Kaieda Information Service.  He collects Mai in a taxi, and the two of them go into hiding.

The Wisdom Alliance is not pleased.

Part 2 - Under the Cherry Blossoms of Spring

The Wisdom Alliance wants the Kujus.  They tail Kuju to his workplace, the Marubishi company, but a member of the company's intelligence (MCIA) helps Kuju escape undetected through the basement.

Mai, meanwhile, is bored.  She calls her friend, and naturally the call is traced.

Kuju arrives just as the KIS do, and hauls Mai away from her dinner towards the train station.  Kaieda himself is waiting there for them - and is very interested in Kju's martial arts technique (which he demonstrates on a few of Kaieda's men).  Kuju doesn't care to discuss it, however.  They fight, and Kaieda almost splits Kuju's head in two - but Mai bends Kaieda's sword with her mind.  Father and daughter escape.

Part 3 - Togakushi: the Sacred Land

Mai has finally cottoned onto the fact that they're after her.  Kuju chastises her for using her powers so carelessly.  She cries, and he comforts her.

Kaieda is injured, but determined to find the missing pair, and tracks them to Togakushi.

Mai is frightened as she recognizes Togakushi from her nightmares.  Kuju can't calm her, and has to knock her out.  Madarao welcomes them to the shrine.

Part 4 - The Monster

Madarao declares that Mai's powers were given by their god to the daughters of the Mihiro family, who founded the Togakushi shrine.  Kuju blames the powers for the death of Mai's mother, Maki.

Kaieda decides to play his trump card - a monster of a man named Tsukiro.

Mai is enjoying the peace of Togakushi shrine, but inevitably the KIS turn up.  The locals warn the Kuju's of their arrival.

Part 5 - Trapped

Kuju tells Mai about her mother at Maki's grave, but the KIS are closing in.  Mai doesn't want to leave, as it's the first time she's been to her mother's grave, but Kuju tells her that they must.  They leave the shrine, following the 'Devil's Path'.

A local policeman unfortunately informs the KIS of the path's existence.

Madarao and his fellow priests defend the shrine from the KIS.  Kaieda drops Tsukiro down on the shrine from a helicopter, ordering him to kill the priests and chase the Kujus.

Part 6 - The Battle Formation of the Togakushi School

The priests fight Tsukiro.  Tsukiro wins easily.

Mai slips off the path, but her father pulls her back up, just as Kaieda arrives in the helicopter.  The Kujus have to cross the 'Ant's Tower' - a _really_ narrow, high path.  Mai is scared; Kuju tells her she has a responsibility to the people who have died to protect her bloodline.  She walks the path, and the mists rise from below.

Part 7 - The Ant's Tower

The KIS follow the Kujus onto the path, as the mists engulf them all.  Kuju fights the KIS on the path.  Tsukiro turns up and knocks the KIS out of his way and into the ravine.  Kuju and Tsukiro fight; Kuju falls from the path.

Part 8 - The Destiny of the Line

Mai collapses the path under Tsukiro with her powers.  Kaieda flees.  Mai mourns her father.  Her mother's spirit appears to her and tells her that she must persevere, that it's the powers of the Mihiro women that have kept Togakushi free from the ravages of war.  Mai has to go on alone - but Tsukiro grabs her ankle, and pulls himself up out of the gorge.  Mai throws her bag at him and runs.  A stranger turns up and stand between them.

Part 9 - A Travelling Companion

The strange hiker fights (dodges? o.O) Tsukiro, leading him headlong into the ravine once more.  Mai thanks him, then heads up the mountain on her own.  The hiker (who had been headed for Togakushi) changes his mind and follows her, concerned that she won't make it on her own.

Kaieda is still looking for the Kujus; he finds Tsukiro, wounded.

Part 10 - 450 Gs

The Wisdom Alliance is very interested in Mai's little trick (collapsing the path), and want to find her - whatever the cost, and in whatever condition!  Mai and the hiker are in Itoigawa, eating lunch - only they don't have enough money left to return to Tokyo.  The hiker plays pachinko to try and get the cash, but fails miserably until Mai uses her powers to win (bigtime!).
