THE TITANIC REPORT

The Titanic was a huge ship that had a disastrous maiden voyage. The Titanic had many advanced safety features, like automatic water tight doors and bulkheads, yet still sank. There were a total of 2203 people on board the Titanic. 1324 of which were passengers and 899 were crew members. The Titanic could carry a maximum of 3547 people, 2603 passengers and 944 crew members. In 1907, plans for the Titanic to be built were made. Between 1908 and 1909, the Titanic was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyards. The Titanic was owned by the White Star Line. It has a sister ship, the RMS Olympic. The White Star Line was owned by JP Morgan, an American Railroad Tycoon. Wednesday, April 10, 1912 was the sailing day for Titanic. It traveled from Cherbourg, France to Queens Towns, Ireland. On April 11, the Titanic left Queens Town. On April 12 and 13, the Titanic sailed through calm and clear waters. On April 14, many iceberg and ice field warning were sent to the Titanic. Captain E.J.(Edward John)Smith regarded them as normal warnings. A total of 7 iceberg warnings had been sent to the Titanic. The Ship, MESABA, sent a message reporting that the Titanic was headed directly into a icefield. By 9:30pm, the wireless room became very busy. The Wireless Operators were not employed by the White Star Line. The main job of the operators was to tend to the passenger's telegrams. Weather Reports and ship-to-ship telegrams, come second to Passenger's, for they are not paying customers. At 11pm, the Californian broke in on the wireless to report:"We've been stopped by ice." Titanic wireless operators, replied "keep out, you are jamming my signals." So the Californian operator shut off his radio and went to sleep. This would later prove to be, one of the many, fatal mistakes. the water temperature is a chilling 28 degrees. At 11:30pm, the look out seas the iceberg dead ahead and the first officer reserses port and orders hard rudder right. This is attempt to miss the iceberg, the ship turns and it appears they have missed the berg, but then they hear a scraping noise, and the Titanic had hit the berg. At 11:40pm, the Titanic had hit the Iceberg. If the Titanic would have hit the berg, straight on, it would have damaged the first four water-tight compartments. This would have left the ship OK, till it got to New York City. The time is now, 11:50pm, water has poured into and risen 14 feet in the fromt part of the ship. Midnight, now, April 15, Captain Smith has been awaken from his sleep and is told the Titanic has but an hr., possibly two left. Radio Distress Signals (S.O.S.- Save Our Ship) begin being sent out. At 12:05am, orders for the lifeboats to be uncovered and passengers and crews are to be ready on deck. Two things to remember. The Titanic's shipbuilder and oversee stated that it was "practically unsinkable." Media took this statement as "it was unsinkable." Thus, the passengers truly believed that they were on could not sink. The second thing to remember, is that they're only enough lifeboats for 1178 passengers. There were a total of 20 lifeboats, 16 wooden and 4 collapsible. The ship could stay afloat if 2 of the 16 watertight compartments were flooded. Many first class passengers didn't want to go out in the cold only to be returned to their rooms. Even in the lifeboats, many passengers believed that the ship wouldn't sink and that this was only a precaution. By 12:25am, the order is given to load lifeboats, women and children first. The Carpathia responds to distress signals and heads to the rescue, the Carpathia however is 58 miles to the southeast. At 12:45am, the first lifeboat was lower with only 28 people on it. The lifeboat, #7, had a capacity of 65 people. The first distress rocket was also fired. There was a closer ship, the Californian, which misunderstood the distress rocket's as an identification rocket. The Californian was only 10 miles away, however it's radio was turned off because of an earlier incident with the Titanic wireless operators. If the Californian heard the S.O.S. signals, they had the capacity for all of the passengers on the Titanic. The distress rocket's were white, instead of the distress color of Red. At 1:15am, the Titanic's tilt is stronger and lifeboats leave the Titanic more full. Forward lifeboats have lowered and passengers move towards the stern (rear) of the ship by 1:40am. By 2:05, the last lifeboat is lowered with 1,523 on board the ship. At 2:18am, the last radio call for help was made. Captain E.J. Smith says: "Every Man for Himself." The bow plunges under and many passengers jump. The forward funnel collapses crushing many people. The Titanic's lights blink and then go out. Survivors in lifeboats see the Titanic break into. The bow now sinks. At 2:20am, the stern settles and is level for a few seconds, the it fills with water. The Titanic has sank and those who jumped have frozen to death. The location of the disaster is 500 miles southeast of Newfoundland, Canada. The Titanic's depth is approx. 2 and 1/2 miles. In just over 1 hours, 3:30am, rockets from the Carpathia are seen by survivors. At 4:10am, the first lifeboat is picked up. By 8:50 am, the Carpathia leaves for N.Y.C. The musicians played until the ship sank. The band also played in First Class Lounges. Dr. Robert Ballart, found the Titanic in 1985. The Titanic was a very large boat. The length of the Titanic was 882 ft. 9 inches, and the beam was 92.5 ft. The Titanic weighed 46,329 tons. The average (and top speed) was 21 knots. The Titanic had 9 deckss and 3 classes. A first class costs $4,350 (which is comparable to $50,000 in today's money), while a third class ticket costs $30 (which is comparable to $345 in today's money). Many very wealthy people were on board the Titanic. Third class passengers may have been trapped, because they weren't allowed into the area's of the other classes. I believed the Titanic disaster could have been prevented. Even if the Titanic was to sink it could have been less disastrous. The first way is to have carried enough lifeboats. As mention above, the 20 lifeboats onboard, had a maximum of 1,178 people. The second way is to have lauched the lifeboats full. The third way is the wireless room. If the incident didn't happen, the Californian would have heard the distress rockets and would have come to the rescue. The Titanic's sinking could have been prevented. They could have used stronger stell. The Titanic was going for a world record and they were going too fast through icy waters. The rudder for the Titanic was also too small. A total of 1,523 people perished and 705 were saved. This was truly a sad disaster.
