KATAKANA
U: has two vertical strokes
WA: has only one
KU: has diagonal stroke instead
KE: horizontal stroke sticks out

FU: one horizontal stroke
WO: two horizontal stroke joined to diagonal one
RA: two horizontal strokes not joined, top shorter than lower horizontal stroke
TE: horizontal stroke stick out

SU: FU with a tail
NU: FU with a tail crossing it.
ME: has slanting stroke
NA: has horizontal one.

A: towards the left
MA; towards the right. Neither is written vertically.

SHI: topmost stroke first, long stroke going upwards last
TSU: leftmost stroke first, long stroke going downwards last.
N: long stroke going upwards
SO: long stroke going downwards.

HIRAGANA
HA: has one horizontal stroke
HO: has two horizontal strokes touched by vertical stroke
MA: has two horizontal strokes crossed by vertical stroke, does not have line at the left
YO: has one horizontal stroke touched by vertical line

TE: stroked joined together
KO: like TE when written quickly
NI: KO with line at the left

WA: tail going inwards
NE: WA with a loop
RE: like WA but with tail going outwards

SO: like rest (music), opens towards the right
RO: like the number "3", opens towards the left
RU: RO with a loop

A: NO with a cross on it
O: vertical line continues to form a loop, has a dot

I: left stroke longer than right
RI: left stroke shorter than right

KI: two horizontal strokes, opens towards the right
SA: one horizontal strokes, opens towards the right
CHI: like the number "5", opens towards the left
