Friends

He sat on the park swings an sobbed quietly. Tears slowly trickling down his little cheeks one after the other as he stared at the source of his dismay, a bruised swollen ankle. He wiped his eyes with pink sleeve of his kimono, the movement make the swings sway slightly. He teetered back and forth with his good foot and watched the wind blow leaves all around the park and the sun slowly fade in the late afternoon sky.
He hoped his ankle would feel beter so he could walk home soon or hoped that someone would come looking for him. He remebered how he had begged to go out and play on the jungle gym and slides and promised to come home befor sundown.
"I'm a big boy daddy can't I go and play by myself. The parks just a few blocks away I'll be good I promise," he pleaded and his father finally gave in an let him go. But he wouldn't be able to make it home in time with his ankle the way it was. "And dad will never let me go out an play by myself again," he thought sadly.
He tested his ankle by gingerly placing it on the ground and slowly putting weight on it. He recoiled back quickly as shooting pain passed through his leg and cried even harder.
"What's the matter?"
He looked up to see a little girl about his age with a red ribbon tying her raven hair back in a ponytail, wearing a red t-shirt and denim overalls.
"Nothing," he mumbled.
"Then why are you crying," she asked, sitting in the swing next to his.
"I-I hurt my ankle, and I can't get home."
"How'd ya hurt it?"
"Coming down the slide," he pointed to the red plastic attached to the jungle gym that had caused his misfortune.
"I did that once too,: the girl nodded. "It hurt really bad for a while even with it bandaged up."
"I asked my dad to let me play by myself. I promised to get home by sundown and now I can't and dad won't let me play on my own anymore."
The girl got up and knelt down in front of the boys swing. "I'll give you a piggy-back ride, kay?"
"I don't know . . ."
"Come on," the girl urged. "I can carry you, it'll be fun."
The boy climbed onto her back wrapping his arms and legs around her securely.
"I'll take you to my house. My mom can fix up your ankle and call your folks. We also have milk and cookies if you want?" "What kind of cookies?"
"Chocolate chip."
"Okay," the boy smiled happily as they began walking down thestreet.
"My name's Kagome,I'm six. What's your name?"
"Inu-Yasha, I'm six too."
"I like your ears. I wish I had furry ears they're cool."
"Thanks," Inu-yasha smiled.
"Wanna be friends?"
"Okay."
