Guangxi Museum - Guilin - Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
Guilin is located in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region founded in 1958. Guilin is considered one of the most beautiful cultural cities with a long history in China. With an elevation of 150 a karst region, features a typical karst landscape. Characteristics of Guilin scenery are its oddly-shaped solitary hills rising out of flat ground, transparent waters winding through the region, intricate caves in various shapes and exquisite stones. Hence the popular saying - the mountains and water of Guilin are the finest under heaven. The Guangxi Museum displays botanical and zoological specimens, historical relics, and Taiping history. It also boasts the largest collection of bronze drums (over 300) in China. South Lake Park has 1200 varieties of medicinal herbs, plus orchids and Bonsai trees.

Natural Fantastic Stone Gallery - Guilin - Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
In the brief time that I was in Guilin in November 1995 I managed to find my way to the then newly opened Guilin Natural Fantastic Stone Gallery. It is housed in the Seven Star Park situated to the east of the Li River away from the centre of town. As far as I can remember, it was quite a long walk into the park before one arrives at the gallery. At the entrance is a huge river polished boulder with stunning cavities and promontories. The stone collection is housed in newly built, beautifully designed buildings. The collection is an intriguing combination of art, science and culture. Most of the stones, mineral specimens, stalactites and fossils are presented on carved wooden stands in aesthetically pleasing ways. The collection even houses a piece of the Berlin Wall although at that stage it did not have its own stand! Adjacent to the stone gallery is a Penjing collection although when I was there, in 1995, it was in a bad state of disrepair and not very memorable.
