Past Meetings
Chapter Sixteen
by, Cony
They walked, circling the lake, when a rumbling sound was heard.
"There it is" said Zoisite. As he said, the cascade was just some
meters away. It was very high, about 45 meters from bottom to top.
The silvery water fell with a sound similar to an explosion. The
bottom was full of foam, and a big pool of water was naturally
formed. It was a beautiful place, full of the power of nature. They
walked on the edge, looking down. None of them suffered of vertigo,
so it was easy. Besides, Mercury felt very comfortable. All these
water around made her feel more secure. She had always had an
affinity for water, even before she was revealed to be Sailor Mercury.
She got closer to the edge, and looked down. She felt as if she
could fly if she jumped. The breeze moved her hair and uniform.
"Mercury, are you Ok?" asked Zoisite. He was worried. Since they
had arrived, Mercury was distant, as if she was being enchanted.
"Yes, I'm sorry. It's just that, I feel so good in here."
"Well, let's go now. I think down there is a passage down there
where we may pass."
They started walking, until Mercury screamed, and grabbed her
head. "Get out of my mind!" she was screaming.
Zoisite took her by her shoulders, and asked: "Mercury, what's
wrong?"
"He is in my head! Please, get out!"
The General was helpless. There was nothing he could do to help
her. He grabbed her shoulder, trying to comfort her. Mercury was
trembling, and shook Zoisite off. "Leave me! You won't get me! I'll kill
myself first!" Immediately, the girl ran to the edge, and still trembling,
jumped.
"Nooo! Mercury!!" was the cry that broke the night's peace. He ran
faster than he ever had, and stretched his arm, to catch her. There
was a split second in which he doubted he could make it, but
Mercury extended her hand, and he got her by the wrist. She was
left hanging only from his grip. Looking at her face, he saw she was
crying: "Let me fall, please! I'm never going to get rid of him. Please!"
"Never, do you hear me? Never. Mercury, I know you can do it!
Where is the young girl I was so proud of?"
"You... you are proud of me?" asked Mercury, as a kid of 10 years
would do.
"Of course. I've never met a girl with your strength to get over things.
Now, come on, let me pull you up." He pulled and pulled, but he was
in a fragile position, and couldn't make too much effort. However, the
tear stained face of Mercury gave him new energy, and he used all
the one he could master. He pulled her until her waist was at the
height of the edge, and she put one of her hands on it. But, in there,
there only was loose rocks, and her hand slipped. Zoisite had lost
his support, and with nothing to handle their weight, they both fell
into the waterfall, with no way of escaping their fate in the pool below
them.
