An Open Proposal to Jake Lloyd

Jake as Anakin Skywalker

Dear Jake,

Hello, my name is Akane. Will you marry me? No, not right now, of course not. You’re only ten. But I can wait for you. Maybe in nine or ten years, you’ll be ready. I promise it won’t interfere with your college education. I bet you haven’t even started thinking about that yet, have you? I think I would make a good wife for you. I promise to be faithful to you, very loving, and supportive of your career. I’m majoring in film and creative writing, so we’ll be in the same field of work. We could even collaborate sometime; I could write and direct a film you’d star in. I’m open-minded about lifestyles, too. I suppose you’re not old enough to worry about children yet. I’ve always wanted a little girl, but I think we’d make a beautiful little boy, too. And I swear that, if we had twins, I’d never name them Luke and Leia. Or even Anakin and Amidala. I’m a redhead with brown eyes, about 5'7". I even did some modeling before college. I think we’d make a nice pair, though you’d always be the more attractive one.

I’m a sophomore in a women’s university right now. I have a GPA of 3.42, and I’m one of only 15 girls a year to receive the school’s top scholarship. I enjoy reading, writing, and watching movies. Have you ever heard of Japanese animation, or anime? Ever seen Pokémon, Dragonball, or even Sailor Moon? Well, I’m sure if you tried it out, you’d like it. And what do you think of alternative lifestyles? I guess I can wait a few years for that answer.

I hear you like comic books and video games. Nintendo 64 to be exact. We have one, too. Sure, it’s my brother’s, but I’ve played it once or twice. I’m more into the original NES. That’s way before your time. You’d probably think it was lame. I’d love to show you my old favorites, like Dragon Warrior, Lolo, and Dr. Mario. I’m also into comic books. Very into comic books. It seems you like classic Marvel titles, like Spiderman. I loved him when I was your age. I was also into the X-Men (especially Generation X), before it all went downhill. That was before your time, too. Now, I prefer independent titles such as Dawn and Strangers in Paradise, but I’m not immune to good mainstream teen team titles.

You missed the 80’s completely, didn’t you? Wow. Well, I have music and movies to introduce you to, too. I also like ska, punk, Tori Amos, and J-pop. You’re probably not familiar with any of those, huh? I like Top 40 music, too, if that helps. Though, I’m sure our tastes will change over the years. I might even get you interested in musicals! But I won’t push. I promise.

I promise to never call you “Jakey” or “Ani,” and never ask you to support me with your career. I won’t bug you to introduce me to famous actors, or get jealous of the women you work with. I’ll listen to you, care for you when you’re sick, even (attempt to) learn how to cook. All I ask for in return is a loyal, loving, equal relationship. I’m willing to share all of my thoughts, hopes, and dreams with you. Are you willing to do the same? Or shall I give you a few years to think about it? No matter; I can wait. If you ever need me, I’ll be around. I know a lot about life for my nineteen years. I could teach you a trick or two. But only if you’re ready. Think about it.

Love,

Your hopeful fiancée,

Akane
