Metal craft is an art form that has flourished in India and has been passed down the generations to what it is today. Gold, silver, copper and brass metals are intricately designed as jewellery, utility items and images of gods.

Gold and Silverware

Gold and silverware are essential items in an Indian household. Intricately designed gold jewels are worn by both men and women. The Indian goldsmiths and silversmiths design enameled jewllery, and enameled utensils like the pillboxes and wine-cups. The wide range of silver items includes the silver anklets, the silver jewels and the silver utensils.

Lucknow, the seat of the Nawabs of Avadh, produces an extensive range of gold and silver plated articles.

Brass and Copperware

India is one of the largest exporters of copper and brassware. The wide range of brass and copperware include the kuthuvilakau, the traditional lamp used in south India, and metal bells.

When articles are made out of one or more pieces of metals, the brass or copper sheets are marked using a pair of compass and cut by scissors. The required shape is then brought about by heating and hammering the sheets. Finally, the metal is polished to give it the shine. The major centers of brassware designing are Moradabad, Varanasi and Mirzapur.

Metal Ornamentation

Metal ornamentation using contrasting colors and different textures of metals are famous. The inlay, overlay, applique and fixing of colors are the various techniques used by Indian craftsmen.

Lucknow is famous for the bidri art. Bidri, a form of surface ornamentation, is in black colour. This work is relieved with silver and gold inlay, and does not fade with time.

Enamelling

Enamel work is the art of coloring and ornamenting the surface of a metal. The skill and resources available to the craftsmen determine the beauty of the article.
