Mohammed, the Prophet of Islam, was born in Mecca in Arabia in 571 AD. The word - Islam, has its roots from Slim and Salam, meaning peace. The followers are Islam are called Muslims. Islam teaches faith in the all-powerful God - Allah and in the Prophet of Muhammad. The earliest source of the preaching of Islam is the Quran, the holy book of the Muslims.
Teachings of IslamAccording to Islam, a Muslim has to regulate his life according to five principles.

- He must proclaim the unity of God and the prophethood of Muhammad
- He must offer prayers fives times everyday, and on Friday afternoons in the mosque
- He must give alms to the poor as an offering to Allah and as a religious act
- He must keep fast from dawn to dusk in the Ramzan month
- He should, if possible, make a trip to Mecca in his lifetime
Islam is a religion that does not believe in idol worship. The emphasis is on a life of virtue and benevolence. Some of the festivals celebrated by Muslims are Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zula and Muharram.
