Sikhism was founded in 1400 AD by an Indian teacher Nanak. He was the first of the ten Sikh gurus. According to Sikh, the gurus are the messengers of God. The tenth Sikh guru, Adi Granth, declared that the Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib be used as a teacher.
Teachings of Guru NanakNanak taught belief in one God, in whose sight everyone is equal. Sikhism believes in reincarnation, where people pass through various existences. The Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture, is treated with great reverence. It is placed in the Gurudwara.
Gurudwaras The most important gurudwaras, are at Amritsar, Tarn Taran Anandpur, Dera Baba Nanak, Kartarpur and Patna. Amritsar has headquarters of the Sikhs ever since the Mughal Emperor Akbar gave the grant of a piece of land with a tank in it. Amritsar stands for pool of immortality to Ramdas, the fourth guru.
Sikhs Festivals
Gurpurab or birth anniversaries of gurus are celebrated as holy days by Sikhs. But the birth anniversaries of the first Guru and the last Guru are celebrated as festivals where verses from the Guru Granth are recited and later the Granth is taken out in a procession.
