Tenchi Muyo!  Ryo-ohki (OAV)

This OAV (Original Anime Video) is the first ever Tenchi series that led to the TV series, spin-offs, and movies.  In this series Tenchi gets the keys from his grandfather that go to the gate at a cave wich is a prison to a demon.  At first Tenchi just thinks that the story his grandfather told him was maybe just an old tell, but inside Tenchi finds the demon and accidently sets her free.  Later we find that the demon was Ryoko and at first she fights Tenchi and trys to get the gems from the sword from him.  After the first battle she stays with Tenchi and starts to fall in love with him.  As each episode progresses, new characters are introduced.  Ayeka, Sasami, Ryo-ohki, Mihoshi, Tsunami, Kagato, Dr. Clay, Zero, and much more.  Note:  This series is more mature than the TV series, so I would say it would be appropriate for 15 and up.
