Bara No Tame Ni
Akemi Yoshimura, Flower, 16
Yoshimura has a style of artwork that I would describe as fairly realistic. The artwork is clean and the people are drawn realistically; I really think its very attractive, distinctive art.
The story of Bara No Tame Ni matches it's distinct artwork. It is a story which, though based on an unlikely situation, plays out quietly and slowly.
It essentially follows the life of Yuri, who is constantly described as "busu" and "debu" -- colloquial speech for a "dog" and a "fat cow". Mean, but, that's what they would translate well as. We first meet Yuri when she's sitting with a friend of hers, crying about how her boyfriend broke up with her; she's a sweet girl, but, not much luck -- especially since immediately afterwards she goes home and is told that her grandmother (her only living relative and guardian) has just died! Yuri doesn't know what to do, but one day, a person helping her finds a letter from her grandmother. In it, her grandmother states that her mother is alive, and she is in fact a famous, beautiful actress! Yuri decides to go up to Sapporo to live with her. Another fact is revealed to her as soon as she arrives: she has three beautiful siblings, a sister, Fuyou, and two brothers, Aoi and Sumire. She soon becomes something like a housekeeper to them, and slowly gets to know her new family. I don't want to give away too much in the story, but I think it's a really, really beautiful story. I recommend it as highly as I possibly could. Please, do yourself the favor of reading Bara No Tame Ni. It is a mature and moving story, one that I feel most readers could probably relate to. Highly, highly recommended.
