What is Anime?
back to main

The word anime originally derives from France (believe it or not). But in the United States, anime means japanese animation. You can usually tell whether it is japanese animation or not by the big and sometimes "cat-like" eyes the characters have. When anime was first introduced outside of Asia, it was believed to be gross and perverted; the biggest misconception being that all anime are hentai (perverted anime), which is simply not true. There are lots of anime out in the U.S. market that are perfectly suited for adults and kids alike. Such include some of Hayao Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service, and Mimi O Sumesaba. Sailor Moon , Dragon Ball Z , and Pokemon are popular kids anime that are perfectly suited for family viewing. Other popular versions of anime include the classic Speed Racer and Voltron.

Lots of japanese animation are based on manga series (the comics do so well that it is crossed over into the anime market). Sailor Moon and Ranma 1/2 are two examples. Manga, otherwise known as comics or graphic novels, are mainly aimed at three audiences. Either boys, girls, or adults. Shonen manga is boy's comics. Shôjo manga is girl's comics. Some manga, though, cross over that reader-specified boundary. Magic Knight Rayearth and X/1999 (aka "X" in Japan), were originally made for girls, but are now also read by many guys.

Dubbed means that the original voices are replaced with new voice actors. Subbed means that there's captioning on the bottom of the screen.

Where can you find anime/manga videos and other goodies?
