How To Draw Heads

Back
1. First of all, the average head is shaped like an upside-down egg with a few variations. Face structures can range from round or oval to square or heart-shaped. You also must keep in mind that foreheads take up a little less than half the entire head. Anyway, first draw a circle. This will help in making a symmetrical egg-shaped head. By drawing a circle you can achieve several different angles for the head. You must learn to draw from different view-points to succeed in drawing human and anime/manga figures.
Circle
2. Here I've shown you three basic angles of the head. Notice how a circle can help achieve various angles. When drawing the full view of the head, make sure to draw a line vertically cutting the circle in half. This will help you locate the chin. Cut the circle horizontally with three lines so that there are four sections. This will help you in placing the eyes, nose, mouth, etc. It's kind of hard to actually explain it, so in words, look at the picture and just copy it. 3/4 view and 1/2 view are more difficult and require more practice. I guess all I can say is to just look at the picture and try to do what I did.
Various Views
Full View3. The rest of the tutorial will focuse on the 3/4 view head because I think that's the hardest. So for full and 1/2 view, I'll just sum it up in a couple of sentences. When drawing a full view head, make sure the eyes as well as everything else are proportional. Eyes and ears are pretty much on the same level. The 1/2 view requires more skill. Notice that the head is slanted a bit diagonally. That's because it's how real heads are like.
1/2 View
3/4 view4. First, try to copy what I did. The circle is still divided into the sections. Instead of making straight lines for the full-view, I curved it to make the circle look more rounded. You may notice that the first dividing line is slanted, but for 3/4-view, it doesn't have to be. It can be vertical. The chin still meets at the first dividing line and the ears are still roughly in the same area. The farther end of the head should have a slightly smaller eye than the closer end. Use the pre-drawn lines to help align them. Eyes are spaced a little more than an eye apart.
Eyes
Inked Drawing5. Here I inked in the drawing and erased the rest of the lines. And viola! You have a head. And of course, the finished product: lazily colored with adobe photoshop.
