The butterfly lovers
Rain
(The background midis you're hearing is from here. This is the original song.) It's Chinese
instrumental sort of song, from " ÏÉ ½£ Ææ
ÏÀ ´«", a Chinese rpg computer game that i
used to play. It's a really nice game, with nice characters, plot featuring
love triangles, tragedy, sacrifice and hope. Oh, and how could i not mention
the music? It plays in the background throughout most of the game, changing
songs whenever something new happens.
About this particular song:
Since most people probably won't be able to play this game, esp. if you
don't read Chinese, i suppose it wouldn't hurt to spill the beans on this
particular scene in the game this song comes from.
The story of the song:
Sometime in ancient China,
there was a scholar who was passing by a bush when he saw a butterfly trapped
in the web of a spider. It was a beautiful yellow butterfly, and looked
small and helpless as it tried vainly to struggle free.
Touched, the scholar decided to free
the butterfly. But as he released the butterfly, the spider suddenly came
out and stung him on the hand. It hurt slightly, but he was too happy that
he had freed the butterfly that he did not pay it much mind.
When he went home, his condition worsened
day by day, and though his family called for many doctors(his family was
rich), none could cure him nor lessen his pain at all. He simply lay in
bed all day, unable to walk.
One day, a young girl came to his family,
claiming she alone could cure him.
With little hope, they let her try to treat him. His condition rapidly
improved when he drank the herbs she had picked for him. Soon, he could
speak with his family, and get out of bed to walk about.
The scholar's family was ecstatic, and as
soon as he was well enough.promptly had them married,
However, he was never fully recovered, and
always felt dreamy, his thoughts incoherent. A strange smell perpetually
permeated his room, such that all those who smelt it felt drowsy. His family
grew suspicious of this girl, accusing her of
always being out for long periods of time, though she said it was to pick
herbs for him. They thought she was an evil spirit, and gradually managed
to convince him likewise.
Finally, a priest was called in to exorcise
this spirit, for the girl was truly a spirit, but contrary to their belief,
she was a benign one. As he summoned the spirits of the elementals, the
girl came out of the room, showing herself to be a butterfly spirit, for
there were two large, delicate wings of a butterfly on her back. Unable
to defeat the priest, she fled away on gossamer wings into the forest.
By the time the priest found her again, in
a clearing among the trees, she was locked in a terrible fight with a giant
black spider spirit.
It turned out that the girl, the butterfly
spirit, had made a Faustian deal with the black spider spirit, that if
she supplied this black spider spirit with the scholar's life-energy for
some time, the spider spirit would finally give the antidote to her sting
to the scholar, curing him once and forever.
Yet it was all a sham. As soon as the black spider
spirit gained enough life-energy, she would use her magical powers against
the Butterfly. The Butterfly originally had 1000years of meditation, so
that she could change into a human at will, and was more powerful than
the Spider, who only had 500years of meditation. However, with all the
life energy, the Spider was soon alot more powerful than the butterfly
spirit. Furthermore, there was no cure to the spider's sting.
The butterfly spirit was about to get eaten by
the spider when the priest came. He managed to kill the Spider, but the
butterfly spirit was still very sad, for there was no cure for her lover,
and she knew he could not live for more than a year.
The scholar lay motionless on the ground, seemingly dead.(the spider spirit
had brought him there, probably to eat him)
Then, the butterfly spirit decided to sacrifice
herself for him. She gave him one last kiss, in which all her 1000 years
of mediation and magical powers went to him, though they could, at most,
give him 10 more years of mortal life.
The scholar awoke, just in time to
see a small yellow butterfly fluttering around him. It circled him twice,
then disappeared into the bushes.
At the bequest of the butterfly spirit,
the priest never told the scholar about her, and the scholar never knew.
He still believed, right to his death, that that "evil spirit"
that tried to poison him, was finally exorcised.
