"In the light of the moon"

a Suikoden fanfic by: Keon Ravnholt Christensen (Ravenkeep@hotmail.com)

a few things of interest.
In my game, the hero is named: Edrik McDohl.
and the castle is called: Akari Castle.
The Suikoden universe and characters are copyrighted by KONAMI

Edrik stepped onto the roof of the Akari castle, the moon threw it's soft bluewhite light down upon him. He could feel the wind pull in his cloth and hair, he walked a few steps over the roof and stopped at the edge. He stood a minute, taking in the spectacular view. felling the moment, he knew would never return. Even through it was in the middle of the night and the whole the Liberation Army, except for the guards were sleeping. The water below him and the island some miles from the castle was covered in a strange light, making everything clear. A moment Edrik stood watching the waves below him and the moon's glittering reflection on the surface. The whole scene seemed to be almost out of a dream. It was calm, peaceful. Edrik grinned to himself, several months ago, the young boy Edrik Mcdohl, son of Teo Mcdohl would have taken little notice of such a peaceful moonlit night. He sat down on the edge, rocking his staff back and forth. But now, the young boy was the leader of the Liberation Army, bearer of the true rune Eater of souls, Edrik sighed. And responsible for many hundreds of lives and many more deaths, a great deal caused by himself.
Resting the staff on his lap, Edrik took of his right glove. Sitting a moment studying the rune that decorated his hand.
The eater of souls, the rune that governs life and death, the harvester of souls. It was the most powerful of the 27 true runes, it had many names. But Edrik had over the time he had worn it decided that the most fitting of the rune's many names was: the Cursed rune. Each time somebody or something died or suffered, it fueled the rune, made it stronger.
Edrik balled his right hand into a fist and closed his eyes, he was tired of this endless killing, the many deaths weighed so heavy on his shoulder.
Edrik felt a tear work it's way down his left cheek, as the image of a boy surfaced in his mind, his unruly deep brown hair, the big even deeper brown eyes. Edrik remembered his friends words, hearing in his head "please take the eater of souls, you must not let it Windy get it..... if it brings you suffering, blame me" Edrik lowered his head, it would be so easy, just to leave it all, to blame someone else. He lifted his eyes to the sky and looked at the moon "no..." he whispered, then continued more loud "no Ted, I won't blame you, you were my friend, you don't blame your friends" he put the glove back on.

he sad several more minutes to just relaxing and taking in the magnificent scenery, it was rare that he had time to relax like this, just letting his mind drift. "Master Edrik" a soft feminine voice whispered through the cool night air, Edrik jumped slightly, he hadn't heard a thing, but on the other hand he had been so lost in his thoughts, that a stoneboar could have walked by him and he wouldn't have noticed. He turned his head, a slim form appear out of the dark, Kasumi.
Okay that might explain why he hadn't heard anything too. The petite Ninja walked up to Edrik, Edrik felling slightly uneasy at her presence. It was no secret that Kasumi had a crush on him and Edrik wasn't really sure how to deal with the situation, if the truth had to come out, he had never had a girlfriend before. Kasumi stopped beside him "master Edrik you shouldn't disappear like that, if I hadn't seen you walk up here, the whole castle might be awake and on alarm now" Edrik looked away from her eyes "oh, I just wanted to take a few minutes to sort out my thoughts and look at the night" Kasumi lowered her own gaze "oh" and then looked at the moon "beautiful" she exclaimed after a brief moment, then looking at the water below them, that glittered like silver. Edrik looked at out of the corner of his eye, she was cute, when she grew older he was sure she would become very beautiful. Suddenly she lifted her head a bit and asked out in the night air "do you think we'll win?" Edrik taken a little of guard by her blunt question, thought a moment, then said "sure we will, it won't be easy, but we'll win" Kasumi giggled lightly "I wish I had your self-confidence" she said. There was a few moments of silence, were only the waves breaking on the rock below was audible. Edrik looked at the ninjagirl, she sitting looking down on the water again, he could see how the thoughts tumbled around inside her head. Then she said without raising her eyes "it's a big battle tomorrow" Edrik nodded slowly, it was the real reason he had walked up on the roof, to clear his mind, try stop worrying about the upcoming battle "yes it is" he replied. There were a few more minutes of silence, each of them descending into their thoughts. Then kasumi asked still not looking up from the waves rolling many hundred feet below them "are you scared?" Edrik looked at her, he hadn't expected Kasumi to be a person that would be afraid before a battle, but then again. She was ninja, she was not use to grandscale, open combat. Edrik could remember how nervous he had been at his first battle, the one against Kwanda Rosman. "No, not any longer, once the big battle scared me.... in a way they still does, but not the way you mean" he studied her face while he talked, she was in fact very pretty. She lifted her eyes slightly, but still looked at the water "I'm so scared I couldn't sleep" Edrik cocked a eyebrow "really?" a faint smile crossed Kasumi's lips, those soft, rosy lips. Edrik caught himself staring and blinked. Kasumi giggled slightly and turned her head "yeah, why do you think I noticed you leaving your room" Edrik blushed a bit, talk about overlooking the elephant because it is sitting on you. Kasumi was about to say something more but, just then their eyes meet. Edrik looking into Kasumi's blue and her looking into his brown. And it was just like the moment froze. Neither of them dared to breath, while they where yelling at them self in their mind to do _something_
then very slowly, Kasumi move her face forward, more or less consciously Edrik did likewise. Her soft eyelashes descending like the wings on a sundrunk butterfly. A moment Edrik wondered why the whole Liberation Army not came crashing up to them, after all. He was quit sure that they could hear his very rapid beating heart all the way over in Kaku. Then he closed his eyes and their lips meet, it wasn't a deeply passionate kiss. It was feather light and innocent, but never the less. It made it tickle all the way out into her finger tips and toes and her heart skip several beats and him warm and fell like a jellyfish in ways of a spinal.
It felt like a hour, but was in fact not more than 15 seconds. Then a deep voice broke the silence "A-hem!!" Kasumi and Edrik parted and jumped away from each other with such speed, that you could almost hear the pop as the air filled the holes their bodies had been occupying splitseconds before. Kasumi gave a little shriek of suprise and embarrassment, while Edrik spinned his staff around, bringing it to bear to the possible opponent.
In the door to the roof stood Viktor, Pahn and Cleo. Viktor first, in his pants and nothing else, his sword slung on his shoulder, flashing a big lopsided grin, it was him who had caught their attention. Pahn was in a similar state of cloth to Viktor, plus his always present head band, his battle claws glittering in the moonlight, the big warrior was leaning on the doorframe with a sly grin. Cleo had a more modest nightgown on, was standing beside viktor with a little smile. "My, my master Edrik" she said, trying to hide the smile.
"Erhhh..." exclaimed Edrik intelligent, Kasumi just looked at her feet, blushing.
After a minute, Cleo sent Viktor and Pahn away with a few well chosen words. Then taking kasumi with her as she walked towards the stairs, stopping shortly beside Edrik "you should go to bed master Edrik, you'll need all your strength tomorrow" "I'll be there in a moment Cleo" he nodded. As the last two disappeared he looked at the moon again, taking a good long look and then took a deep breath, turning on his heal and walked towards the stairs. He had a battle to win and destiny to fulfill.
