Wanted to review this ever since I saw the ?Singing in the Rain? musical a few months ago, though the reason for that will be clear soon.
Nana believes in the number 7, more so than the usual person. For starters her name does mean 7, and if you close your eyes and count to 7, what you wish for will come true (well that's what she believed anyway). Shoujo manga being what it is, ofcourse this is not the entire story. Nana's life has plenty of complications most of them being caused by her classmate, Kobayashi Kazuki. A self-proclaimed star with big ambitions: though most of his effort seems to result in clowning around (according to Nana).
Then there is her sister Yuri to consider about. Yuri is Nana's older twin, who is also a well-known pop actor/singer. Physically, they don?t look much alike, and their temperament could not be more different, but it's undeniable that the two are very close. Nana had never envied her sister's fame or her success; it seemed to be an unwritten agreement that where Yuri will shine on stage, Nana will lead a normal life as a student. All that changed when Kazuki enters the picture. One day he went into Nana's mother's dance studio, literally begging for dance lessons, and with Yuri dropping in unexpectedly, it didn't take much to guess that Yuri Saitou is also known as Yuri Aimoto.
Later, Kazuki was accepted as one of the studio's students, and whether she likes it or not, Nana is dragged to become his rehearsal partner. Unexpectedly, Nana realised that she has a talent for performing that surpassed her sister, and when she had to take her sister's place when Yuri fell ill, the acting bug managed to get its claws on her. Thus begins her journey towards a path similar to her sister, and this impact on her relationship with Kazuki.
This is by far the best of all of Asagiri's work. In terms of consistency of drawing, plot line and originality it beats every other things she had ever written by miles. (I love the part when they staged Singing in the Rain", if you look carefully some of the poses are taken straight fron the movie). The trademark love triangle still exists, but her combination of character is different to her run of the mill one extremely cool, cold guy, one well meaning, though idiotic guy and the girl. Fujimura Ryou, particularly is one absolutely drool worthy character that Asagiri have not managed to replicate anywhere else...
Saitou Nana
The heroine, she seems to be set to be as different from her sister as possible, whether this is unconscious it''s hard to tell. Certainly without the stage, she probably be set as a volleyball player.
Kobayashi Kazuki
Earnest and happy go lucky, he's the catalyst that makes the story happen. He basically turns his back on his family in order to pursue his dream as a performer.
B
The mysterious and rebellious up and coming star with an eye on Nana. Needless to say he plays Kazuki?s main competitor for Nana's affection.
Fujimura Ryou
He's so cute, but that's beside the point. His interest in Nana is based on her talent; he wants to harness it in order to produce the perfect play. Androgynously gorgeous, you have to watch the scenes when him and Nana are together performing the school play.
Michel
Nana's guardian angel, or something that's similar. They met by chance when he was performing on the streets, and he becomes one of her most staunch supporter.
