song: Cocteau Twins/lyrics: Lin Xi
Want to cry,
want to smile
I also want
to jump
Want to call
out, want to shout
I want to
possess *
Thinking of
someone all of a sudden
Thinking until
the sky is hazy and the earth is dark
I also don't
want to see anyone
Want to think
through the mortal world **
Want wind,
want rain
I also want
to get drunk (no responsibilities, no worries)
Want to be
wayward, want to be right
Want to get
drunk (no grief, no worries)
Want to kiss
someone all of a sudden
In these months
of flowers, wind, and snow ***
Want to love
someone all of a sudden
Want to continue
loving no matter what
If I want
to distance myself, to imagine not loving you
All of a sudden,
thinking until I frown
Thinking of
you, thinking of you, want to fly
Love makes
one beautiful
It could also
make one think randomly all of a sudden
Thinking of
this, thinking of that
Want to cry,
want to smile (Will the weather be good tomorrow?)
I also want
to jump (Want to not think of not wanting to speak anymore)
Want to call
out, want to shout (How about loving all over again?)
I want to
possess (I already said I don't want to speak, don't want to speak anymore)
Want wind,
want rain (I will don a monk's robe tomorrow)
Also want
to get drunk (Can't think of it, it doesn't matter)
Want to be
wayward, want to be right (Beg him, begrudge him, love him)
Want to get
drunk (Don't want to speak tomorrow, don't want to speak anymore)
* Don't bother
to try to make sense out of these lyrics because they don't
make sense
even in Chinese. Lin Xi's lyrics are usually quite good; however,
sometimes
he's just plain sloppy. It is obvious that when he was writing these
lyrics, he
simply slapped a bunch of rhyming words together (smile, jump,
shout, and
possess all rhyme in Cantonese). Lin Xi has done this on a number
of songs,
including the last verse of "Di-Dar." Another note: As I said in the note
under "I Think"
in Di-Dar, "want" and "think" are denoted by the same word in
Chinese, and
Lin Xi uses both senses of this word throughout the lyrics
** Here Lin
Xi changes the expression "see through the mortal world" into "think
through the
mortal world."
*** I translated
this line literally; in Chinese, "months of flowers, wind, and snow"
simply means
the passing of the seasons.
song: Faye Wong, Dou Wei/lyrics: Faye Wong
I thought that
we could be together forever
Lots of times,
I think of this and I don't want to fall asleep
If you could
give me a sincere certainty
It doesn't
matter; nothing matters to me
The road ahead
is perhaps not too clear
After I proceed
on confidently, perhaps I'll find it exhausting
Perhaps I'll
want to stop but cannot stop
The darker
the sky becomes, the more tired my heart becomes
I saw your
face, listened to your unvoiced pledge
At that moment
I discovered
That one day
I walked past you and didn't catch your gaze
I take my heart
and give it to you to console
Is it possible
for me not to have to take it back?
[Please] don't
think that a resolute heart is unbreakable
[Please] don't
think that nothing matters to me
song: Zhang Yu/lyrics: Richard Lam (Lin Zhen Qiang)
When the breeze
flies past in the long night
When the sky
surrounds only you
In your sea
of thoughts, I hope you'll think of me
When the deep
night cannot be shattered
When the darkness
cannot understand me
I can only
pretend that you're still holding me tight
But are those
who are separated really alone deep in the night?
Will you fall
in love with someone else in your boredom?
To see you,
to kiss you
It's then
that I possess heaven and earth
I despise
separation, whether long or short
Will wait for
you, I'll wait for you
Even if we're
separated by heaven and earth
I will save
every kiss
And wait until
I can kiss you again
When the breeze
flies past in the long night
When the sky
surrounds only me
Would you
know who longs for you again?
When the deep
night cannot be shattered
When the darkness
cannot understand me
Would you
know who wishes to have you at this moment?
I also hope
that you will remember
To keep your
heart until I kiss you again
song: Dolores O'Riordan, Noel Hogan/lyrics: Thomas Chow (Zhou Li Mao)
The person
of my dreams
[Let's] tightly
embrace for a minute
Then kiss
for ten minutes
How can a
stranger
Walk into
my heart
And cause
this ecstasy?
It seems that
you and I were once in love
It seems that
I've never been so close to you
Thoughts start
becoming outrageous
Why do you
attack me all of a sudden
In order to
enter my boring dream
And cause
great trepidation?
The person
of my dreams
Really want
him to become real
Searching
in my dreams
At this minute
I'm waiting
For a ten-thousand
minute kiss
Searching in
my dreams
[Let's] tightly
embrace for a minute
In my heart
I'm unconfined (?)
The person
of my dreams
At this minute
I'm waiting
To excite
my heart
My heart is
in ecstasy
Knowing Oneself and Each Other (track 5)
song: Cocteau Twins/lyrics: Lin Xi
I am the crack
of dawn, you are tomorrow's morning
Your career
keeps you company, clothes get in my way
Have been
unable to take flight long ago
In the world
of two people
Who am I and
who are you?
I'm the lips,
and you're the eyebrows
Put them together
In a world
into which love cannot be put
Love has died
unnoticed (love has died)
Knowing you
and myself
Why avoid
it? (why avoid it?)
The red skirt
is mine, the blue chip is yours
All the toys
are yours, the decorations mine
Can afford
everything, in this happy world
Who am I and
who are you?
Once made
me and once made you full of joy
Two people
each having their own world
Said at first
that we would love [each other] until death
Even if the
present can't be compared to the past
We're still
together (still together)
Haven't faced
crisis
But each [of
us] flies on his own
The distance
between us is like that of sky and earth
song: C.Y. Kong/lyrics: Lin Xi
Looking at
his eyes I think of someone else
I have stayed,
but my heart has not*
I look at
the lights of the night, yet I think of white clouds
A night like
this is too boring
And that time,
that night was so captivating
I cannot understand
any of the boisterous jokes
Confused amidst
the crowd of people, I seem to be in outer space
My empty arms
seem to embrace
It seems to
be me but it isn't me
And I'm just
creating my dreams
There is no
end to sleepwalking at whim
Sky and earth
seem so free
People actually
love to sleepwalk
Consciousness
is filled with too many curses
This flighty
existence is the only thing I feel I own
I develop according
to my moods
[I'm] in midst
of the vivacity, yet my heart isn't there
I mumble to
myself, my inspiration flies about
I'm sitting
in the car, it's as if I'm flying over the fields
It's too stifling
this way
Yet my moods
are so entangled
Sky and earth are free
Love to sleepwalk,
it's freer than sky and earth
Only when
sleepwalking can I find no boundaries
Need to sleepwalk,
it's freer than sky and earth
Let me sleepwalk,
I find no boundaries
* I'm not sure
about this line; in the lyrics, no subject is stated,
and so it
can be interpreted in two ways. I have translated it
in the first
person, since the previous line was "Looking into his
eyes I think
of someone else", suggesting that even though she
has stayed,
her heart is somewhere else; however, you could
also interpret
it as "He has stayed, but his heart has not."
