India and Maldives

Maldives and India have shared friendly neighborly relations for many years due to commonality in cultural, religious and ethnic links. The ties between the two countries have been nurtured through high level diplomatic and bilateral exchanges between the governments. India has made significant contributions to the development of economy of Maldives. The two countries have worked on a number of mutually beneficial projects. Notable among them is the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, which was constructed and gifted by the Government of India to Maldives. Indian medical experts have been deputed to work in the hospital and contribute towards health care in Maldives.

The Maldives Centre for Technical Education was set up by India in Male with the aim to train and provide technical education to Maldivians. At present, the Government of Maldives is negotiating with Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, to provide distant education to Maldivian youth. Scholarships are offered by Indian Council for Cultural Relations with the aim to provide University education to Maldivians.

Maldives is a popular holiday destination amongst Indians. Tourism for Maldives is a major source of income. A special trade agreement between the two countries has permitted the export of essential commodities to Maldives from India. India exports consumer goods, cement, medicines, textiles and agricultural produce to Maldives. India principally imports shells and red corals from Maldives. The close and cordial relation between India and Maldives is regarded as a model which neighboring countries must have.
