India and Pakistan

India and Pakistan have shared about 5000 years of history together. One of the earliest urban civilizations of the world - the Indus valley civilization dwelled in the valley of the river Indus between the present-day India and Pakistan. From then to this day, people of India and Pakistan have reflected the similarity in history, diet and culture together. Islam was brought to the region around the eight-century AD from the middle east. Today, both the countries are home to a large Muslim population eventhough India is primarily a Hindu State. Common languages spoken by the people of the two countries are Punjabi, Urdu, Sindhi and Hindi.

Pakistan Flag. Not to scaleThe Moguls bequeathed the style and luxury of popular culinary delicacies to India and Pakistan. To-date lamb is still the king in North Indian and Pakistani diet. Women of India and Pakistan are fond of henna or mehndhi as it is popularly known. At weddings in both countries, the women folk adorn their hands with mehndhi. Salwar kameez with dupatta or veil is a traditional attire of the womenfolk of bothe the countries.

Movies, singers and artists are greatly appreciated by the people of Pakistan and India. Urdu gazals, qawali and shayrees are liked by people of both the countries. Popular among the Pakistani artists in India are Ghulam Ali, Nusrath Fateh Ali Khan, the new pop group Junoon and Reshma. Some of the popular Indian artists in Pakistan are Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Madhuri Dixit, Pankaj Udhas, Noorjahan, Zakeer Hussain. Veteran Indian actor Dilip Kumar was recently the recipient of a prestigious award in Pakistan.

Cricket and hockey are the most popular games of both the countries. Every match is packed with a lot of patriotism and passion!! Popular among the sports personalities of the region are Sunil Gavaskar, Imran Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, Jansher Khan, Geeth Sethi and Jahangir Khan.

Primarily India exports sugar and molasses, oil meals, spices, dyes, iron ore, drugs and pharmaceuticals, paints/enamels/varnishes among others to Pakistan. In the year 1996-1997 exports to Pakistan from India totalled to about Rs. 55,783 lakhs. India imports fruits and nuts, pulses, textile yarn, fabrics/made-up articles, oil seeds and raw wool from Pakistan.
