Shiva

Shiva Lord Shiva, the destroyer god, sits in a meditating posture. Mount Kailash in the Himalayas is regarded as his abode. He has matted hair which holds the flowing Ganges river and a crescent moon. A serpent is coiled around his neck. He holds a trishul in his hand. The vehicle of Lord Shiva is the bull, Nandi - a symbol of happiness and strength.

The representations of Shiva as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance, are perdonifications of his enactment of the end of the world, when the universe falls into ruins and is recreated by Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva presides over East and West, the points of Sun's birth and death.

Goddess Parvathi or Gowri is his consort. Maha Sivarathri, a festival celebrated through the night, is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
