Wedding sarees are always elaborately woven, with red and gold silk thread. The most popular amongst them are the traditional Banaras sarees. In south India, the wedding sarees are heavier and incorporate traditional motifs in gold thread. Kanchipuram, near Madras, is a major center for silk saree weaving, and the sarees woven here are often referred to as the Kanchipuram sarees.
Wispy and pristine white sarees, with traditional gold borders are worn by Kerala brides, the only exception to the red worn elsewhere in the country.
