The USS Jydian is a medical transport and research vessel. The Olympic class vessel was picked becuase she is one of the best suited to be a medical vessel. She was named after Commander Shavar's deceased daughter Jydian Shavar.

The Jydian's systems include augmented bio-neural gel packs which were premiered in the Intrepid Class vessel. They are soon to be integrated into most recent Starfleet vessels as standard, due to the superiority over the conventional Iso-Linear circuitry.

This vessel isn't the first Olympic class vessel to be a medical transport and research vessel. The USS Pasteur, Commanded by Captain Beverly Crusher was also a medical transport and research vessel. Captain Crusher was also the Chief Medical Officer on board the USS Enterprise D and USS Enterprise E. Also in 2365 she became the Chief of Starfleet Medical, after that she was reassigned to the Enterprise.
