VALKA CITY THEATRE

The town of Valka lies on the banks of the Pedele river in the Talavas region. It is about 500 years old.Valka has played a special role in Latvian history and culture.The beginning of our theatre can be found on May 10, 1871, when there was the first theatre performance in Latvia in Valka.Since this time theatre life in our town has continued.Famous Latvian theatre producers and actors have worked in Valka. The profesional theatre and opera had worked in Valka.Till 1919 our National theatre and National Opera got their names here.

Nowadays there is Valka City Theatre in Valka with 12 actors and technical staff. The traditional place of the theatre performances is the chamber hall at the Culture centre of Valka.A very simple sceanery and lighting is used.Valka City Theatre has performed in Latvia, Russia,Estonia, Lithuania, Australia, Teze Community /France/ and in other European countries.It has take part in International theatre festival in Lithuania, Estonia, Bulgaria, Germany, Austria as well as in Latvia. There are plays of Latvian, German, Check, Spanish, Finnish , French writers staged in our theatre. Since 1992 International theatre festivals “ Talvils” are organized in Valka.

The thetre company can be called experimental, tending to produce non - traditional performances referring to the place and the produced literary material.

We are glad the Earth is feeding us and the Sky is giving us light.We understand that the Earth and the Sky are united and we are an inaleinable part of the endless and everlasting Universe.

The light of theatre is necessary to us as a slice of bread.We recollect in the bright light on the stage we suddenly feel we are living the life of other people, even the life of other nations.
