| Wicca is a form of paganism that focuses on two dieties: the goddess and god. Wiccans acknowledge magick, and have eight sabbats and estabats. Wicca was officially started in the twentieth century, but pulls from many old world religions. Scott Cunningham, author of Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, states: "Therefore, Wicca can be described as a shamanic religion. As with shamanism, only a select few feel compelled to enter its circle of light. Today, Wicca has dropped the ordeals of pain and the use of hallucinogens in favor of chanting, mediation, concentration, visualization, music, dance, invocation and ritual drama." (p.4, 2000) Wicca is a positive religion that uses what many call "white" magick (I disagree with this phrase because I believe all magick is gray, it's how it is used determines it's positive or negative energy). Wicca uses the earth (goddess) and the sky (god) to become closer to the deity and the energies of the universe. There is many ways that Wiccans use to become spiritually connected through physical means. Like Cunningham mentioned, wiccans use many different forms to communicate with the world around them. In today's world of man made technology, it is easy to forget that nature is all around us. Wicca simply focuses on just that: nature. Revering nature and patterns of such is no new philosophy. Ever read your daily horoscope and realize what it said was true? That is because even the horoscopes in the newspaper are determined by the astrological lines of the planets, which is a part of natural influence. Wiccans' goals are to receive a greater understanding of nature and how it effects our lives, as well as listening and bonding with the goddess and god. To acheive a greater knowledge of Wicca, one must learn about the philosophies of the goddess and god, which can be found under this link: |
