Demetrio Comuzzi began his studies with Luigi Alberto Bianchi at the
Music Conservatory "G. Verdi" in Milan and soon dedicated himself to the chamber
activity. In this field he played as a very young soloist in musical festivals like
Concertus Musicus Firenze (1977), Piccola Scala Milano (1978), Radio Svizzera Italiana
Lugano (1978). In 1977 he became the first viola soloist of the Orchestra Giovanile
Italiana (Italian Youth Orchestra) in Siena and of the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale
Fiorentino; in 1981 of the Orchestra Regionale Toscana. From the beginning of his career
as a soloist he's got recognition and several prizes: first prize at the First National
Viola Competition in Vittorio Veneto (1977), Prize "Guido Monaco" in Talla
(1980); Prize "Peterlongo" in Siena (1980); first prize at the Internazional
Competition "Vittorio Gui" in Florence (1980); first prize at the Internazional
Competition for String Quartet in Rome (1981). In 1980 he was awarded with the
"Diploma by Merit" at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena; by the same institution
he received the "Honour Diploma" in 1981.
Thanks to this recognition he took part in several international
chamber music festivals internazionali like Assisi (1980-82) and the Sermoneta Festival
Pontino (1979), playing with famous musicians like: Ferraresi, Pelliccia, Filippini,
Stefanato, Petracchi e Asciolla. His studies culminated with the teacher M° Piero Farulli
in Fiesole and the diploma with full honour obtained under his guidance in Turin in 1981.
After that the improved and continued his studies in chamber music with Riccardo Brengola
in Siena and in Rome and his study of the viola with Dino Asciolla, first at the Festival
di Cittą di Castello, then in Rome at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. He
was chosen as "artist in residence" at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa
for two years (1983-1985) as first musician in the history of the famous university. In
those years he was also called to be a member of "I Solisti Veneti": with this
group he played as a soloist in the most important theatres in Italy and abroad, also
recording several LP and CD. Since 1994 he has been regularly invited to participate in
the world tours of the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala directed by the most famous
directors: Riccardo Muti, Carlo Maria Giulini, Wolfang Sawallish, M. W. Chung. Professor
of Viola, Quartet and Chamber Music at the conservatories of Messina, Como, Bolzano,
Vicenza, Reggio Emilia, Rovigo, Matera, Vibo Valentia and Foggia he is constantly invited
to hold national and international master-classes in quartet and chamber music for
important institutions: such as Asolo Musica, Saluzzo, Fivizzano.
Since 1985 he is the Viola of Nuovo Quartetto Italiano, heir of the
big Italian tradition of the quartet experience and considered by the critics as one of
the best quartets of the world. The group was awarded in its career with several prizes
and in 1986 was decorated with the gold medal by the President of the Italian Republic for
the European Year of Music in 1986 and with a grant for artistic merit as best Italian
group. Since 1985 Nuovo Quartetto Italiano has played in some of the most famous world
institutions, also receiving important invitations: in New York at the Palace of the
United Nations, in Madrid at the Real Palace for a privat concerti in honour of the Queen
of Spain, in Tokyo at the Suntory Hall and in Moscow at the Hall of the Conservatory
invited by Sviatoslav Richter. As a consequence of this last performance the group began
the artistic collaboration with the famous Borodin Quartet, playing in octet all over
Europe.
Nuovo Quartetto Italiano has recorded many CDs for Adda, Nuova Era,
Emi and Claves, that obtained several prizes by the critics like Gran Prix du Disque, Choc
de la Musique, Diapason d'Or and Silver Star. The last CDs are dedicated to the Italian
music for string quartet of the last two centuries, with the intention to re-discover this
artistic repertory. Nuovo Quartetto Italiano has exhibited in quintet with important
classical musicians like Carlo Guaitoli, Roberto Cappello, Maurizio Zanini, Stefano
Grondona, Danilo Rossi, Enrico Dindo, Vincenzo La Scola, Bruno Rigutto, Boris
Petrushansky.
In addition to this Nuovo Quartetto Italiano is one of the few
Italian classical groups to play jazz and new music in collaboration with musicians and
composers like Eddie Daniels, Chick Orea and Franco Battiato. With this latter Nuovo
Quartetto Italiano has recorded many CD and has been called to play as exclusive group in
all his last tours of 1999-2000, held in the most important Italian theatres.
