Luigi Mazza began his studies at first at the Conservatory "Monteverdi" in Bolzano with M.o Giannino Carpi, then at the Conservatory "G. Verdi" in Milan under the guidance of M.o Paolo Borciani, who took him at the diploma with the highest result. As a young musician he won six times the National Competition for Violin Students in Vittorio Veneto, getting special awards by the numerous juries and obtaining a special honour mention in the first edition of the International Violin Competition "Michelangelo Abbado". In 1977 he won a grant to participate at the Master-Class at the National Music Camp of Interlochen (USA), where he had as Professors M.o Angel Reyes and M.o Ernst Silberstein and was part of the World Youth Symphony.

He begun his concert activity in 1978 playing as a soloist and/or as first  solo violin with several chamber orchestras. In 1981 he founded a duo with the pianist Pierpaolo Maurizzi playing in Bologna for the Chamber Music Society and partecipating to the seminary of M° Franco Gulli and the pianist Enrica Cavallo. Meanwhile he recorded for the RAI-TV (Italian National Television) the Sonata op.78 by J.Brahms.In the same year he attended the Master-Class hold by the Trio di Trieste at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena.

He was a member of I Virtuosi di Roma, with whom he was on several tours, also in Japan.In 1983 he attended the Master-Class held by Detlef Kraus at the Johannes Brahms-Gesellschaft Hamburg and won the International Chamber Music Competition of Hamburg.In these last years he has collaborated with renewed chamber groups like I Solisti della Scala and I Virtuosi Italiani and has been called by the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala to take part in several productions and tours under the guidance of renewed directors like Riccardo Muti and M.Wung-Chung.Near the regular teaching of String Quartet at International Chamber Master-Classes and Festivals such as "Asolo Musica", Fivizzano, Saluzzo, he is professor for violin at the Conservatory "A.Boito " in Parma.

He is one of the founders of the Giovane Quartetto Italiano, a name suggested by M.o Paolo Borciani, M.o Elisa Pegreffi, M.o Piero Farulli and M.o Franco Rossi, who were their teachers. The quartet immediately got important recognition: for two years the Honour Diploma at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena, at the Accademia Musicale Pescarese and at the Staatliche Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe. He got the Agis-prize in 1982 and the Dragoni-prize in Fiesole.

The Giovane Quartetto Italiano has performed in the most important venues in Italy and all over the world (Japan, USA, URSS). Also collaborating in quintet ed octet with numerous artists: the pianists Mario Borciani, Maurizio Zanini, Bruno Rigutto, Boris Petrushansky, Roberto Cappello, the guitarrist Stefano Grondona, the clarinettists Depeyer, Mayer, Daniels, the violist Danilo Rossi and the Borodin Quartet. For its CD with Claves, Emi, Adda and Nuova Era the Giovane Quartetto Italiano - from 1996 named Nuovo Quartetto Italiano - got the highest recognition given by the critics: Stella d'oro, Diapason d'or, Choc du Monde de la Musique, Prestige, Gran Prix du Disque.
