Too bad people think that Opera is for snobs. They are missing so much!!! Once you know the stories, the period, the composer, the singers, you listen to opera with new "eyes". Kids should study opera (starting at first grade), just as they teach History, Math, etc. There is so much beauty and peace in opera. Maybe it would make a difference in the way people interact with one ano

Is ther a complete listing of operas on video without havin to go through many links? I'm new to the internet and find it difficult sometimes, I'd like a single source. Many thanks.

I am 43 years old, but just "discovered" opera music within the last 30 days (strangely via a 2nd or 3rd viewing of Shawshank Redemption in which Andy plays a duet from Le Nozze de Figaro). I researched the song title, bought a highlights CD, and now I'm hooked. I listen to opera all the time. Since I am in a CD-acquiring mode, I have been looking for critical reviews of the best recordings. Your site is the best I've found. Looks like a LOT of time and effort went into it. Thanks for sharing your expertise with a novice. BRAVO! If you could provide a "Top 10 opera CDs" list to help get me started on my collection, I would appreciate it. I am particularly fond of some of the duets I have heard, e.g., "Viens, Malika" from Lakme and the previously mentioned "Conzenetta sul aria" ( p?).

I need help please! Many years ago, when I was much younger, I heard the most beautiful opera. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the beginning of the title, but it is __________ of the Carmelites. It is about a group of nuns who is beheaded. It is soooooo oo beautiful, and I desperately want to hear it again. If anyone is familiar with this opera, or knows the full name of it so that I can do a full search, please e-mail me! Thank you!

You did a fabulous job last evening hosting the Helen Traubel program for WSNY. I've enjoyed your WSNY seminar presentations for years, especially the comparisons of different performers in the same musical excerpts. Even with a signal to noise ratio of 1 /88 the de Reszke excerpt (at the Lohengrin seminar) was wonderful; I hadn't realized any recordings of him existed. I hope you've heard the 1951 Bayreuth Gotterdammerung recently released for the first time. Knappertsbusch's performance gives new meaning to the phrase "raw elemental power". Act III is incredible, especially from the Funeral March on to the end. Varnay as never sounded better (sort of like Nilsson - except with warmth) and Weber is a wonderful Hagen. Thanks to the late John Culshaw for this one! I think your site is great; my curiosity has already been aroused about certain of the performances you've reviewed that I don't have ...

Love your site. Am looking for CD's/tapes on M. Robin. Can't find any. Looking for info on Phil Trepea (I just know I'm murdering his name!) He had a radio show, Matinata, on WVIP in Pound Ridge, Westchester County, New York - - it was wonderful - - modern and classic arias, opera facts, trivia, etc. Wonder where he is now does he have a radio program (if so, where, maybe I can get it on the internet). Also, did anyone tape any of his shows? If so, would like to purchase them (or some). Thank you.

It'a pitty that today aren't major or good opera singers. Perhaps there aren't good voice teachers ? One has to look at the 50's to 70's: Callas, Tebaldi, Freni, Moffo, Scotto, Gencer, de los Angeles, L. Price, Arroyo, Caballe etc. among the sopranos. Di Stefano, Del Monaco, Bergonzi, Corelli, Domingo, Pavarotti, Carreras, Gedda, Wunderlich, Vanzo, Bonisolli etc. among the tenors. Mezzos like Simionato, Bumbry, Verrett, Cossotto, Barbieri, Resnik, Horne, Berganza and many other baritones and basses. What o we have today? Singers that sing a year or two and have no good technique at all. What HAPPENS to old dear opera and and it's singers? Long live OPERA!

I studied in Vienna at the Akadamie, Konservatorium, and Preyner Konservatorium. If I had the money, I would move to Vienna again. I dearly miss the Staatsoper Musikverein & Demels. In Europe sang in chorus with Arroyo, Hoeffgen, Dermota, Guthrie, the beau iful Gueden, Seefried, McCracken,Rubio, Patzak, Ludwig, Svanholm, Schoeffler,Windgassen, Fischer-Dieskau, Frick, Nilsson, etc. Would you please help me find recordings of my friend from student days Michael Theodore. He recorded for Intercord & Ariola-E rodisc. If you don't know his voice, you are in for a great surprise. Vielen Dank, Geo.

Try looking up the RCA recording of Parsifal live from the Wiener Staatsoper 1961 (Karajan) with CL sharing the Kundry with Hoengen. You will find a very strong sounding and AMAZING Ludwig Quite different from the Solti recording! I got ths recording in Europe. Interesting note: CL attributes her mother with teaching her this role and her mother attributes Karajan with teaching it to her....this is the second generation of Karajan's teaching... ...agree about your opinion of the Ludwig performace in the Solti recording but disagree about Solti "being no help" tho!
