II, long before purchasing the Herreninsel in September 1873, had planned
erection of a palace complex following the example of Versailles with the
intention of glorifying the absolute monarchy. He studied all available sources
to become acquainted with Louis XIV. It is related that he borrowed whole
piles of literature from the Bavarian State Library pertaining to the era
of the Sun King for study purposes.
