St. Christines Food Pantry - Detroit
May 2006

We helped to fill grocery bags for the needy in the Brightmoor area.

"Serving in Hope: Spirituality and Service" retreat day at Camp Ozanam
October 2005

Saturday, October 15, 16 people attended the Vincentian Young Adult retreat/service day. The group gathered at Camp Ozanam near Lexington, Michigan. In between reflecting on how our Vincentian spirit calls us to reach out and serve Christ in the poor, we helped to create a pathway in the woods for the Stations of the cross. As we blazed the trail in the woods we reflected on how we blaze the trail for the poor; how we allow Christ to blaze a trail in our hearts.

 

St Vincent De Paul Mass/Celebration at St Vincent De Paul parish, Pontiac, MI

Tuesday, Septmber 27, With all across the world members of the Vincentian Family, the VYA group was part of the local celebrations to honor St. Vincent de Paul. The celebration began with a Special Eucharistic Liturgy. A reception was followed for members and friends of the Vincentian Family.

 

St Vincent De Paul Thrift Store - Clinton Township
September 2005

Saturday, September 24, Vincentian Young Adults gathered at Vincent De Paul Thrift Store. The group members helped to sort, tag and hang clothing, stocking items, and did light cleaning and rearranging.

 

Earthworks garden - Detroit
August 2005

Saturday, August 27, 10 Vincentian Young Adults gathered at Earthworks garden. Although the rain prevented us from gardening, there was still plenty to do. There were plenty of tomotoes and peppers to bag so they could be brought to market and shared with the poor. Fresh honey from the hives needed to poured into jars so it could be sold to make money for the soup kitchen. As usaully, we ended the day by joining hands in prayer.

We helped plant flower beds get the Center ready for their June Garden Party. This party raises money for the Center.

The group volunteered at "Just Us" a home for women and children. We assisted with cleaning and spent time reading books to the children.

 

Ann Arbor Veterans Hospital
February 2005

St. Vincent Young Adults visited patients at the Ann Arbor Veterans' Hospital.

 

"Shoes for Kids"
December 2004

St. Vincent Young Adults volunteered with St. John Health, Providence Hospital, Fox2 and Little Rock Baptist Church to collect and distribute shoes to needy children.

 

"Just Us"
November 2004

The group volunteered at "Just Us" a home for women and children. We assisted with cleaning and spent time reading books to the children.

 

City of Detroit Angels' Night Efforts
October 2004

The group assisted the City of Detroit with its Angels' Night efforts by doing data entry of volunteers throughout the city and answering calls to the volunteer office. The group was thanked by Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick for helping to keep the city safe.

 

St. Aloysius Community Center
September 2004

The group spent a morning making sandwiches, fixing hygeine kits and organizing clothing for area homeless.

 

Earthworks Garden Project
August 2004

In August we spent a morning at the Earthworks Garden in Detroit. We picked vegetables, packed them for market and weeded beds. The garden is organized by the Capuchins and produces thousands of pounds of for the community food each season.

 

Project Vincent in Chicago
July 2004

In July a group traveled to Chicago for a national conference of Vincential groups. The weekend included service projects and spiritual reflection.

 

Sarah Fisher Center
June 2004

We helped set up tables and tents for the Sarah Fisher Garden Center.

Bingo at the Senior Center
March 2004

We ran bingo on a Saturday afternoon at the St. Patrick Senior Center in Detroit. Prizes included flower arrangements, candy, fruit, and hygiene products which were all donated. The most popular prize was money. We had a great time running the giant bingo board. We had a great time and learned a lot from the seniors!!

 

Afternoon at the Movies
February 2004

In February, we were ready for a social event for the group. We met at a movie theater to watch the highly anticipated The Passion of the Christ. Afterwards, we went to one of the member's house to discuss the film.

 

Sandwiches at a Community Center
January 2004

For our January event, we helped make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for homeless in the area. People would come to the community center to pickup their food on Saturdays. We also helped package donuts that were donated from a nearby restaurant. Some of us helped serve the food too.

 

Shoes at the Fairgrounds
December 2004

We helped with the shoe giveaway at the Detroit fairgrounds. Each patron could take one pair of shoes for free. This event was just in time for the Christmas Holiday and the cold weather.

 

Serve Dinner at the Shelter
September 2004

We planned and cooked a full dinner at St. in Detroit. We cooked stew, rolls, cookies, and had juice to drink. We then drove the meal to a homeless shelter in Detroit and served the people there. Most of the time for this event was spent cooking, but the most meaningful part was serving the meal.

Focus Hope
July 26, 2003

Focus Hope reaches out to the community and to the poor in order to develop job skills and to feed the poor.  Focus Hope has many programs, including the distribution of food to seniors.   

At focus hope, we packed about 400 boxes of food.  The food was packed in an assembly line. Below are pictures from this event:

 

 

The Covenant House
June 22, 2003

The Covenant House provides food, clothing, and shelter to homeless young adults.  We landscaped two areas that were barren after the recent construction to expand the facilities.  Below are pictures from this event:

 

 

Northwest Community Health Center
May 10, 2003

Due to the ongoing construction inside the health center, we worked outside to clean up the parking lots.  We removed the bricks, leaves, and trash that was cluttering the lots.  Also, we removed the weeds and trees that blocked the fences.  The day concluded with a prayer service and social.  The parking lots looked fantastic when we were finished.  Once they are repaved, they will be ready for the opening of the center on June 3.
