Chapter 3
Tammy's Discovery
Everyone was crowded in the Trainer’s Quarters. Excitement filled the air and everyone was chittering or chattering away. Alex was looking out at the arena. Tammy came to his side. “Large, huh?” Tammy asked him. “Yeah, pretty big,” was all he could say. It was obvious that he was still overwhelmed by the size of the arena. “Hey listen, the battles are going to begin soon. Want to come pick your number?” Tammy asked. Alex agreed and they both walked over to the number booth. At the competition you had to choose a number before any of the battles. For instance, number one would battle number two and number three would battle number four. The first rounds were held that day. At the end of the day, a ceremony would be held to honor the remaining 60. Since the next day was Sunday, they wouldn’t battle that day. On Monday’s night, a ceremony would be held to honor the remaining 30. On Tuesday’s night it would be 15. On Wednesday, the judges would pick one trainer out of the others and the other trainers would battle. Only seven would make it. This would round up a total of 8 trainers left. On Thursday, the eight trainers would battle and leave 4 trainers. The same day, the remaining trainers would battle and leave two. On Friday the grand finale would be happening. Tammy walked up to the booth and asked for a number. The lady dug in the basket and took out a piece of paper. She gave it to Tammy. On the piece of paper was a number written in black crayon. It was number 1! Tammy was to go first. Just as she read the number the megaphone blared. “Please will number one and number two come out on the arena? I repeat number one and number two! Thank you!” Tammy gasped and started to the entrance to the arena. On her way out someone grabbed her arm and pulled her over. It was Alex. “Good luck!” he whispered in her ear. Then he smiled and winked. Tammy smiled back and continued on. She took her place on the arena. Mr. Callaway started to tell all the rules to the audience. “You may use only three Pokemon each battle. A Pokemon is out when it gives up or gets knocked out. The trainer cannot interfere in the battle or he or she is disqualified.” Tammy looked at her opponent. He was a tall slim boy about 13 years old. His face held a smirk that seemed to say, “Why don’t you just give up?” Tammy smiled at this for she was a very competitive young girl. “And we will now begin the competition!” Mr. Callaway finished off. He walked off the arena. The referee waved the flags which meant they could go. Out of the corner of her eye she saw Alex watching her. She smiled to herself. Her opponent, whose name was Jamie threw out a pokeball. Out of it emerged a white Pokemon. A Ninetales. Just what Tammy was ready for. “Go, pokeball!” she cried out as she threw out a red and white ball. A Vaporeon came out. It flapped its large tail against the ground and looked around the arena. Then it stared at the Ninetales. “Alright Ninetales, we can do it!” said Jamie. “Vaporeon, Water Gun!” Tammy cried. Vaporeon leaped into action. He ran at Ninetales and opened his mouth. Water spewed out and shot ferociously at Ninetales. Ninetales began to jump out of the way, but the water was too quick. It hit Ninetales right on the spot and shot it backwards. Tammy thought it was over, but not yet. “Nine!” the Ninetales cried out. It forced itself to stand up. “Good job, Ninetales. Now, come on buddy! Go! Quick Attack!” Jamie ordered. Ninetales’ crimson eyes gleamed and it started to run. Quicker and quicker it went until Vaporeon was just 10 feet away. Vaporeon crouched down and just when Ninetales was 5 feet away, he jumped up high into the air. Ninetales stopped abruptly and looked up. “Great, Vaporeon!” Tammy said. “Now, do plan H6!” Tammy instructed. Vaporeon started to come down. “Ninetales, watch out!” Jamie warned. Ninetales shot off in a sprint. He zigged and zagged around the arena. Vaporeon was coming down head first with his paws outstretched. Ninetales paused just long enough to take a breath, then it sprinted off. Vaporeon stretched his paws out. They touched the ground for a split second and Vaporeon pulled himself into a ball. Ninetales pawed at it from a safe distance. “Now!” Tammy said softly. She watched intently. Vaporeon sprung out of a ball and took a paw and swiped it across Ninetales’ muzzle. “NINE!” Ninetales screeched in pain. Then, it fell down and fainted. Jamie gasped and sighed. He held his pokeball out. “Ninetales, return!” he said quietly. He took out another ball and threw it out. Pikachu came out. His ears were erect and his tail outstretched. Then, without notice, he curled up into a playful ball and started to roll around. Vaporeon growled and batted Pikachu with his paw. He growled again and swatted Pikachu with his tail. “Pikachu, get up!” Jamie said. He frowned. Vaporeon kicked the ball of Pikachu around and then swatted it again with his tail. “Vaporeon!” he said in a squeaky voice. He then growled again and charged the Pikachu. He slapped it with his tail and then kicked it to Jamie. The referee frowned and held up his flag. “Pikachu refuses to battle! Vaporeon is the Winner!” he called out. “Okay, two down, one to go! This is easy. I’ll be attending that ceremony tonight, for sure!” Tammy said to herself. “Pikachu, return!” Jamie said. Pikachu returned to its pokeball. “I have to use my best Pokemon against her. She’s good! I have to beat my first round! I have to!” Jamie said to himself. “Go, pokeball!” Jamie said as he threw out a pokeball. An Umbreon appeared with her head held high and tail curved upward. “All right, Vaporeon. You know what to do. Let’s check this battle off. Attack,” said Tammy slowly. Vaporeon slowly walked up to the Umbreon. He moved his tail side to side and up and down. Umbreon glared at him. “Umbreon, scratch him, now!” Jamie ordered. Umbreon’s claws came out. Vaporeon put his head down at the paw. He sniffed it; he licked it and looked back up. Umbreon growled and held her paw up. Vaporeon quickly stepped forward under Umbreon’s leg and cuddled up to her. “Vaporeon,” he said calmly. He then licked Umbreon’s face. Umbreon’s claws retracted and she put her paw down. “Umber….” Umbreon pushed Vaporeon’s head up. Jamie stared in unbelief. “What’s going on?” asked the referee. ‘You’re the referee! You should know!’ Tammy thought. She looked at Vaporeon. “Hey, Vaporeon!” she yelled out. Vaporeon stood erect and looked at Tammy. Tammy stared into his eyes. He was trying to tell her. “Vaporeon,” he said calmly. “Vapor!” he added on; he pointed his paw to the Umbreon. “Hey, Jamie! Where did you get that that Umbreon?” Tammy asked. She carefully watched Vaporeon. “Huh? Oh, I got her in Citivan City. At the Pokemon Center a lady was giving out Eevee kits. She said they were all from the same litter. “Yeah, you’re right,” Tammy said looking down at the ground and smiling. “Why? Why do you-What? Are you kidding? You mean they might be brother and, and sister? No way!” Jamie cried out. “That’s not true!” “It is! You just have to face the facts!” Tammy yelled back. “How can I if it isn’t the facts! They ain’t no brother and sister. That’s not true at all. You should face the facts, missy!” “Why would you be yelling at me? All I did was discover they are brother and sister, and you know it is true!” Tammy held her breath and then let it out. “I couldn’t care less! Umbreon, attack that Pokemon!” Jamie cried out. Umbreon turned around immediately and stared at Jamie. It wouldn’t budge. Soon it bared its teeth and growled. Jamie backed off at this and sighed. There was no way to win this battle now, was there?
