Back from the Klondike is a diabolically ingenious puzzle
invented over 100 years ago by Sam Loyd, possibly the greatest
puzzle creator of all time.
The puzzle is easy to understand but difficult to solve by hand,
simply because of the combinations involved.
Additionally, until 1976 no typo-free copy of this puzzle existed.
For most computers, this copy (141K)
of the puzzle is easiest to work with. If your monitor's resolution is 800x600 or less you may find
this copy (116K)
a little easier to fit on your screen, though it's not as clean
as the former. Finally, if you have a PostScript™
printer or interpreter, download
this copy in PostScript (16K)
and print it
out. While I cannot guarantee it meets all the PostScript language rules, it does seem to print on a great many printers that support PostScript. If your printer does not support
PostScript, you might want to fetch a copy of
Ghostscript, which can interpret PostScript and convert
it to a variety of other formats. PC users should also obtain
Ghostview from the same location.
See (for example) this page for more Loyd puzzles, or just use a search engine to hunt for his name. Yes, Loyd spelled his last name with only one L.
