Measuring Excellence in 2000 As the echo boom generation begins to head to university, the halls of higher learning are bursting at the seams

    6/Feb/2001 Universities cry foul
By: SEAN GORDON and NICOLAS VAN PRAET With universities across the province crying foul over the suspension of performance contracts and student groups threatening protests, opposition Liberals called yesterday for the resignation of Education Minister Francois Legault. The reactions came on the heels of news that the performance contracts between Quebec and the province's 18 universities - a key condition for increased funding - have been suspended.

    6/Feb/2001 It's a deal, Mr. Legault
Fresh from his erratic performance in the Parti Quebecois leadership campaign, Francois Legault has made another bizarre move. The education minister has suspended his plan to pump more money into the province's underfunded universities, infuriating university principals who were counting on the money to balance their budgets.
Mr. Legault has confirmed that "performance contracts" signed with a number of Quebec universities, including McGill, Universite de Montreal, Universite de Sherbrooke and Ecole de Technologie Superieure, have been suspended and that future contracts with other institutions are on hold. The contracts called for increased funding in exchange for commitments from the universities to improve teacher productivity and graduation rates.

5/Feb/2001 UNIVERSITIES' PROMISE OF MORE MONEY IS OFF
"Devastating", "terrible" and "nightmarish" are some of the words heads of universities are using to describe what the government is doing.

2/Feb/2001 Concordia serves up Molson brand
By: MIKE BOONE This is just what downtown Montreal needs: another Molson building. The new home of Concordia University's John Molson School of Business is scheduled to open in September 2003. Cabbies have a 31-month period of grace, after which they will have to determine which of three Molson buildings (four, if you count the old brewery) is the destination their fare desires.

Fri 1/26/01 Battle for Montreal never ends
By: RANDY PHILLIPS McGill and Concordia have been battling for intercollegiate supremacy in Montreal since 1975, and while it's not the oldest rivalry in Canada, it is definitely unique and intense. "It's the battle for Montreal," said former Concordia football player Sean Hoas, who ended his five-year college career a couple of months ago.

19/Dec/2000 McGill signs deal with Quebec
By: KATE SWOGER McGill University has signed a financing deal with the Quebec government that will see the university receive $100 million over the next three years in return for balancing its budget, hiring new professors and increasing its graduation rate. Yesterday, McGill principal Bernard Shapiro said that although he's pleased with the reinvestment after years of cutbacks, the amount is inadequate.
