Djibouti, located in northeast Africa, was known as French Somaliland. It was a French protectorate in 1884, a French colony 1896, a territory within the French Union 1946 and French overseas territory 1958. The name was changed to French Afars and Assas in 1967. Became independent in 1977 under the name of the Republic of Djibouti.
